i didn't read this thread but wanted to say i spent a bit over 2 years of my life working at a small but "successful" t-shirt company that made their own "funny" designs/slogans. the whole experience left a horrible taste in my mouth and it is what really brought me to dislike topical humor based on television and movies or pop culture.

imagine what it would be like working for one of those shitty companies. Probably started by some shit head hipster who got rich overnight 10 years ago ripping off old copy written shit like "Virginia is for Lovers". And for a few years the moron made a load of money by selling that shit online and treating his 10 employees like crap cause he thought he was the next Dov Charney. And then one day there are 50 or 100 of these crummy tshirt companies online and the cash runs out and the dude has no more money for coke and escorts. /wrists

bottom line is that the product/merchandise is unofficial and considered "bootleg". none of these companies have licensing deals with will ferrell, for example.

i remember doing a bit of research at one point in time and i counted over 200 (i stopped counting) design variations of I'M ON A BOAT on different shirt sites. fucking horrible.

the job was great though - i got paid well and it was a fun environment for the most part. i had two bosses (the owners). one did the designs, the other made the contacts (he's a famous comedian) and i did the printing and some design work. later i got another employee for me to manage and we got a secretary. i feel our bread and butter was in doing contract jobs for comedy clubs and comedians and bands for example, but our bosses felt they weren't becoming "successful" enough so they focused more on their own brand of funny designs (ie - catch phrases from tv and movies and music).
