There are only a few songs from Bends era that could really be put on the same level as the Beatles. Mind you the Beatles' Bends equivalent era would have been their first 4-5 albums. Bends is inward looking, OK Computer onwards is outward.

Let Down.

I would just like to use this thread as a place to say that Electioneering is an oft-maligned and massively overlooked song. Sure, it doesn't hold a candle to their top tier songs, but it's a fine song in it's own right. That ascending single-note guitar progression in the chorus is excellent.

i didn't say they were. i think comparing bands to the beatles is silly. i just wanted some examples of singers you approve of, for reference. you can dislike rh all you want.

i find some singers annoying that other ppl like [and before i get roasted for this, i do in some cases like a lot of music by these artists i'm just not in love w/ their vocal style]...robert plant, wayne coyne, tori amos, jack white, j. mascis, tom waits, that muse guy, most metal vocalists, in fact the first thing that turns me off a band/song is usually the vocalist.

yeah, Thom is a very powerful singer. It's strange to say he is underrated, but people don't generally talk about how good his voice is. It has gotten thinner and more delicate over the years, but the change works with the music.

Still, there are some vocal moments on Pablo Honey and the Bends that are just mind blowing.

just watched that unreleased song thom played at latitude and it occurred to me that if he was an unknown playing solo at an open mic show then no one would pay attention to him. he has trained his voice well over the years but personally the timbre of his falsetto is not to my taste, and his songs are largely minimalist, meandering and whiny. i get the appeal of that, but he hardly even sings any coherent lyrics anymore. its pretty dull and the hype is unjustified.

Radiohead and the Beatles are alike in that they are both pretty overrated by their fans. I don't like anything that the Beatles put out. I used to love Radiohead and then I noticed that I couldn't shake this feeling of self-hate and the desire to commit suicide so I stopped listening to stuff like Radiohead. But the music is pretty good. There's no best song though. And I do keep waiting for them to put out something different, the way that OK COmputer was so different to the Bends. That hasn't happened since IMO, Amnesiac and Kid A were different again but not in that same earth shattering way, and I didn't make it very far into Hail to the Thief because it sounded too much like Amnesiac and I'd already been there.

If you don't like The Beatles you have no soul or no ears. In fact, I bet most people without souls still would like them. Banana does.
