i didn't call her the first great female guitarist period, just the first great/famous "alternative" one. when i think about great alternative guitarists, i think of johnny marr, mett bellamy, billy corgan, jeff buckley, jonny greenwood, jack white, the edge. not necessarily technical virtuosos but stylistic visionaries. in my opinion probably the two greatest female guitarists period are Kaki King and Kelli Rudick, but I consider them famous for their technical virtuosity more than their application to alternative songwriting. fair distinction?

re: thurston

show me one great riff the man has written. i'm something of a purist and don't give much credit to noise makers unless they are also great writers/players.

name one "alternative" guitarist you like that wasn't influenced and/or inspired by him, directly or indirectly. the entire genre was practically invented by sonic youth

also where's J. Mascis? I reiterate: eat shit.

I mean i can forgive you for not mentioning Michael Gira, maybe you aren't hip to it yet.

but then again you still haven't retracted your original statement even though i provided you with a counter point in Carrie F. Brownstein, so this is all pointless

By which you mean, Thurston was the guitarist who made it cool to play badly and is largely responsible for many of the terrible indie bands we have today?

And anyway, the guitarists you have listed so far are all low alternative, when I'm talking about high alternative. Sonic Youth/J.Mascis/Sleater Kinney have their place in alt rock history but they are tinkerers. I'm interested in players who don't just crudely bash away at the strings but who can create atmosphere (without a shitload of effects), and who can create fine riffs and melodies that have a lyrical quality by themselves, that perhaps blur the line between classic rhythm/lead playing styles and generally stay away from pentatonic and other typical rock/blues scales. I've searched the world over (read: internet) for a female guitarist that meets those criteria and St.Vincent is the only one I've come across. There are plenty of female shredders, classical guitarists, and female punk bands but as yet there has NOT been a famous female high-alternative guitarist.

omg, sonic youth 'plays badly'? they've only done some of the most original/artistic/mindblowing stuff ever w/ the instrument. i wouldn't even attempt to try to do some of the stuff they've done. they're fucking amazing guitarists. anyone can learn a blues scale and a major scale and play a rock lead/riff.

being able to play in several different totally unorthodox tunings [just for one example] takes real musical knowledge/instinct. grr

and st. vincent, yeah i listened to a song. interesting guitar, didn't really care for the song or the singing. hate me.
