also applecare is linked to the serial number of the machine and the personal information you enter when you register the computer (on first startup). not the id that you give them when you purchase it.

thank you for clearing that process up. she was worried about the limitation of using the school discount, even though i know she won't be buying a computer anytime remotely soon. i think i'll try to do it online and then get a rep to split payment for me.

i've used appcleaner and haven't had any problems (it's free). CleanMyMac is also good but requires a license.

So after almost 3 years the gpu failed. I suspect its due to the heating issue. Still had 42 days left of applecare so its in for repairs. I suspect im getting a whole new logic board, this being the 3rd.

Man my 15'' MBP has been dead reliable. That stinks.

I think it's about to turn 5 and I've replaced only the sata cable, which was quick, cheap, and easy.
