Recently wanted a new desktop for the home - and decided to go the PC route, yet again.

That said - I think the last few posts ("we all did" theme) are pretty indicative of what happens to people once they buy an Apple computer. I guess I wasn't just QUITE ready to make that jump yet.

In related news, Windows 7 really is a huge jump up from past versions, it's one of the only PC related things I've been OK with being proud of as of late.

Mac switch is one of those things that you look back on and say "WFT? Why did I think that was going to be so difficult. Windows sucks! I should have done this a long time ago"

are you dead set on a laptop?

My first macbook was an unpleasant one.

I used mine for work (animation (maya/3dsm), graphic design/textures via photoshop and illustrator) using abelton (a daw like grage band), and some minimal gaming (just wow).

it wasn't a terrible computer when it was 100% functional. As mentioned before overheating is an issue. Would constantly get issues when doing photoshop filters and using the preview pane. Would freeze up or you could hear the computer struggling. Would physically get hot to the point of getting your leg hot to the touch.

I was convinced something was wrong and had it sent in for repairs... came back with the verdict of 100% functional. Spoke with a few other friends at work who had macbook pros' and they all had similar issues.

I ended up selling it on craigslist and buying a 3.1ghz iMac and it was the best purchase I ever made. Absolutely LOVE the new style iMacs for day to day graphic design/animation. Outside of the pains of getting use to that mouse, its a dream computer.

So now have my iMac for work (animation/media arts/graphic design), my PC as my gaming rig (for anything other than wow), and a cheap dell as my laptop when I travel.

buy it online. purchase as a "student". online they can't verify that you are or are not. Shipping is free. when they ask for your school just pick the college that's closest to your home address.

i think i'm going to pick one up today at the mac store. as far as purchasing as a student, i would if they still offered the deal where you could get them for around half price but tbh i could give two shits about $100 to spend in the app store.

The student deal on the Pro used to be around $200 off retail. Have they done away with that?

Lame if they did. A lot of kids today are going out and picking up $300 net books instead.

ahhh.

I think I saved $50 on my apple care. But only $20 on my new Mac Mini. They don't discount that one much.

i just came back from the apple store (again). you guys were right.

$100 off the MPB price
$110 off 3yr apple-care
$100 in the app store

i think i can pretend to be in college for that. if i can split the payment between two cards i'll order online otherwise i guess i'll be dragging my gf to the mac store. my old student id (which the dude said would be good enough) is packed away at my folks' house.

@nimrod - no

yeah you'll prob have to buy in store to split the payment between two cards. but it shouldn't be too difficult to get them to give you the student discount

i don't think so either. especially if i can talk to the same kid (got his card). i can think of a million scenarios but i wouldn't want them to sign anything in her name (warranty for example) just because it's her ID. I'm paying for it so even if we pretended it was a joint computer there shouldn't b e a problem.

also i could fill up my shopping cart online and then jsut call customer service to get the payment split up. either way i don't think it'll be too troublesome.

was a little bummed to be walking out of the store empty handed though. better that way in the long run because i completely forgot to research warranty options while i was figuring out how much dough this is gonna cost me.

they only have to enter the school that you're going to. they take down your driver's license info because everyone gets one student discount a year and that's how they track who's getting the discounts. so it won't matter unless you or your gf are planning on buying another mac w/educational discount in the next year.
