yeah, I understand the justification, but it doesn't really make sense, does it? A bike poses more of a threat to a pedestrian than a car does to a bike? I don't think so. Even if a bike hit a person very hard, it would be difficult to equal the force of a car hitting a bike, it seems. It is also much easier for a driver to make a minor mistake and kill a biker than it is for a biker to mike a minor error and kill a pedestrian.

a car could potentially harm a cyclist or pedestrian worse, true. but if bikes were to be on sidewalks there would be a lot more pedestrians injured. it's better to have motorists (AND CYCLISTS) pay better attention on the road then forcing cyclists to get in harm's way of pedestrians when cycling where they do not belong.

I think his point, tho, is: they only "don't belong [there]" because someone arbitrarily decided they belong on the road. If you changed the law to allow them on the sidewalk, then they'd "belong" there, and they'd no doubt pay attention to pedestrians and vice-versa. It's not as though being on the road magically imbues you with extra "pay attention" ability.

the thing is that there isn't any room in a busy city with lots of pedestrians and motorists. and this doesn't change the fact that bicycles are vehicles. would you expect motorcyclists or scooter riders to go on the sidewalk? obviously not, because it's dangerous. do they not "belong" on the road?

I think common sense tells you there's a big difference between an old person's motorized wheelchair or some guys bicycle and cars or vespas. A bicycle or a rascal might technically be a vehicle, but the potential damage they can cause is virtually nothing compared to an automobile or motorcycle.

And for the record, I'm not saying I think bicycles should be on the sidewalk, but I can see both sides of the argument.

it is against the law in virtually every city in north america to ride a bike on the sidewalk. sidewalks are for pedestrians only.

what kills me even more is when pedestrians don't use the sidewalk and instead walk/run in the road

should have free reign to run them over or at least scare them

The black population here do this like no other. They don't use sidewalks and just walk in the middle of the fucking road.

I never see whites doing this. Is it some kind of cultural deal?

it's against the law yet rarely enforced :-/ they do get yelled at quite a bit. nothing worse than having a nice stroll and some asshat biker pummelling down the sidewalk ringing his bell for you to move out of the way. even worse if it's a street with a bike lane!

I think another thing is the speed of the bicyclist. If I'm leisurely riding along, and the sidewalk is mostly empty and I was to give right of way and slow down around what few pedestrians did come along, then I think it's much safer for everyone for me, hypothetical bicyclist, to be on the sidewalk then on the road going 25mph less then cars blazing by. Of course, on the other hand, a bicyclist who's trying to set a land speed record who goes on the sidewalk honking his horn at people is making things much worse. I think if more bicyclists went according to their speed and the situation (when there isn't a bike lane), then people would be alot cooler with them being on the sidewalk, legal or not.

the top four least pedestrian-friendly cities (from a recent magazine article i read) were all in florida. not surprising that cyclists face similar difficulties

i subscribe to this theory. it's all about context. i hop back and forth between road and sidewalk, depending on where I'm going and what streets I'm taking.

i will say that black folks take their time walking across the street, i think it's because it pisses white people off so much.
