It's this "epic" project that Bjork's boyfriend, Matthew Barney, worked on from 1994-2002. Its a series of five movies, art installations, photographs, etc. The Guggenheim is exhibiting the whole thing for the first time ever.

I imagine it's the kinda thing that Billy wishes the Machina mystery could've been - had it not tried to have some point to begin with.

i've been ranting about this shit for the past 2 months! he's fucking brilliant! i'll go as far to say that he's just as big as warhol, if not he will be. are you going to see the films?

Comparing this to machina is really undermining it, imo. the more you read about these images, the more layers and connections you find in things that don't appear to have any significance at all. to some, it's shock value and nothing more, but Barney meticulously planned this art to have meaning and layers in it.

The thing is - what the hell are they? Someone told me that the genius of it is that they are virtually undiscussable; that no matter what you thought, you can't really sit around and analyze it.

hmm well you're making two different points. the cremaster cycle is the cycle a fetus goes through when it becomes a sex. that's the underlying theme.

i would agree with whoever told you that, but i'd have to say that within each movie it is difficult to see why the scenes are in their particular order, and the relations between the five films are still more impenetrable. People do study the non-fictional characters and try to decipher the meaning behind every image, but yes, regardless of how long it is analyzed, it's nearly impossible to feel as though you fully understand it. the images arise very specifically from the private psychology of the artist, and ultimately it is impossible to understand.
