it's not like freud invented this stuff, he took it all from literature and mythology ie, you know, oedipus. people like to totally discredit freud but his ideas are the basis for the way all of us view the way our brains work whether you want to admit it or not.

also yeah it doesn't take a psychology degree to figure out that you're likely to be attracted to someone who reminds you of the person that completely raised and formed who you are. of course you'll also react against some facets of their personality but to be like "ewww that's so weird" is a pretty thoughtless reaction.

Freud presents an interesting way to analyze literature and literally almost nothing else. He provides no practical psychological theories and was just an interesting dude who did a ton of blow.

and ruined lots of lives in the process.

idk man literally all literary theory/cultural studies is based in freud and marx. their ideas, whether we explicitly agree with them or not, completely frame the way that we see ourselves and our relationship to society. which is why i think it's kind of limiting to be like "oh yeah freud LOL."
