Thumbs down Our broadband services are being overloaded. Solution: Put everyone on an allowance!

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/03/....html?hpt=Sbin

Let's not try to improve our joke of a broadband network, which pales in comparison to much of the rest of the developed world; let's just pick the quick and easy option that screws everyone over but the people who stand to make money off of this!

I know, I know...it's their company and they can do whatever they want, and let's be honest: how many gigs of porn and bootleg DVDs do people need to download per month anyway?

Wasn't Obama supposed to champion for net neutrality and against broadband caps? Another campaign promise bites the dust..

The offers that NZ's ISPs have aren't much to be happy about.

Broadband providers in the U.S. hate net neutrality, but they know getting it toppled will be a bureaucratic nightmare. Broadband caps are the providers' Plan B. They know it'll piss people off, but hey, it's the customers' fault that they want to download porn and visit BitTorrent sites. If AT&T, Comcast, et al are going to be stuck treating all websites equally, be prepared to pay the cost of admission.

Fuckin' aye.

Most ISPs already have a throttle after a certain amount (Time Warner is 250g)... didn't know that till yesterday. I guess we don't use that much.

It's the nerds who are using and abusing the web in ways that make ISPs pull their hair out. My friend and his wife are as nerdy as they come and they pretty much do nothing but play WOW and Netflix and torrent In their spare time, and there are still tons of people out there who are computer illiterate and want as little to do with them as possible. I definitely believe the Netflix thing, but there's more to it than that.

they recently dropped the DSL to 19.95 though, so there's that.

Did I not just say I believed the Netflix thing? And honestly, what is the demographic of the people that are watching Netflix all the freaking time anyway? The article says that the average Netflix user streams 11 hours of video a month. That's the equivalent of what, four or five movies? Yes, I think people streaming Netflix is a part of the issue, but I doubt the majority of the problem is caused by Joe Six-pack streaming four or five movies a month on his computer.

my household does not purchase cable or satellite, so we opt for netflix streams over apple tv

we watch it about as much as any other households watch TV

Yeah, just researched that, actually... we pilfer wi-fi off of our neighbors, who coincidentally have placed their router RIGHT beneath our living room. Since I'd rather not have them get a notice that says "your bandwith limit has been reached" and out of confusion/concern drop a password on their router, I looked into if there was a cap.

Comcast is 250 Gb a month, too - and while poking around on uTorrent's settings tab, turns out that there is a way where you can set a limit when your torrents will automatically stop themselves as to not hit that threshold and thus piss off your ISP.

One more reason why I love that program.

This all said? Gotta love neighbors who don't know how to put a password on their router. It's savin' us like $60 a month.
