Thumbs up PARENTS appreciation post.

Caveat: If you hate your parent/parents/guardians for being disgusting and abusive or negligent people, or if one or both are dead, please realize this isn't meant to offend or provoke you in any way.

We complain an awful lot about our parents, but what is COOL about them? Mine:

-When I was a teen/kid they never snooped through my shit and brought up personal stuff to use against me.

-Even though my half-brother died of AIDs from being a druggie whore (who also ran away and stole from my parents when he was young), they didn't turn into psycho parents and lock me up in my closet only to slip occasional meals in. They trusted me and my friends and rarely acted paranoid.

-My dad bought me a car for my birthday /end spoiled snot.

Out of a myriad of examples. Anyone else?

I rolled in at 6 am this morning with two friends, drunk as shit from the night before, and my dad just smiled and said "You are going to have a massive headache when you wake up"

And that attitude says more than anything. My dad would freak out if I was drunk, but he's sort of overbearing about the daddy's little girl thing.

Reasons my parents are cool:

--they carted me all over the county and beyond to auditions
--my dad watched every single one of my Kiss Me, Kate rehearsals and still came to see almost every night of the show
--my mom always got up to make sure we had breakfast
--when I lost my psych book, they didn't even yell
--they let me decide when to apply for and quit my first job
--they are kind and generous people
--once, in a restaurant, we were seated by a family with 3 or 4 kids and my dad got kind of irked, thinking our meal was going to be disrupted by the small children. The kids were really quiet though, and my dad was so impressed and felt so bad about making a snap judgment, he paid that family's bill without telling them. (The waitress's face when he told her wanted to do that was priceless.)

I love my mom!
My father is cool too, even though he is more of a friend than a father

-I went home for 4 days and went out every night with friends and they didn't complain...and I could actually tell them where I was going without them flipping out...and I didn't have to fight to get to use their car (I walked in at 5am one morning, drunk, after spending the night out gambling and they didn't flip out).

-I had no curfew growing up...I just had to let them know where I was going and what I was doing and check in with them...but I could stay out until 6am or whatever every time I went out.

-when I went home the last time, my mom took me shopping and bought me some nice dresses.

-my mom occassionally sends me boxes with stuff in them out of the blue, for no reason.

-they went to every one of my dance performances...even if we performed the same thing every night for a week, they would come every night.

-my mom would get up early every morning so she could wake me up so I could stretch and run through routines in the morning before I went to school.

-while living at home, they never made me get a job. I baby-sat a lot, but I as never forced to make my own money.

-my dad would take me to concerts when I was in junior high (i.e. he sat through New Kids on the Block and Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch).

There is a long list of things to hate about them, though, too. However, sitting here watching A Make-Over Story on TLC, I've had a revelation. There were these two sisters getting a make-over and they were talking about how their mom died and how that makes a difference with their own kids. My mom's mom died a month after my first brithday...I think that has a lot to do with the way my mom was/is with me sometimes.

My mother has been the most inspirational person in my life other than my high school band instuctor.

My mom always stood up for me, and she always took pride in the fact that I would always stand up for what I believe in no matter what anyone else feels. I freaked out and became a teenager for two years, I did drugs, had permiscuous sex, and ran away from home. After not talking to me for a month, she finally let me back in the house and I've been an angel since.

My mom has a certain way of teaching me things without really teaching me. She is over-protective, always has been, but not to the point of being psycho.

Although, my mom is really crazy, a lot of her traits show on me. I love her to death and I don't know what I'd do without her.

My step-dad has also taught me a lot of things and even though he may not know it, all the maturing he's seen me do in the last two years, he's the one who's been helping it along...most of the time.

He is a genius and knows everything about everything. He's always willing to stop whatever he's doing to help me out and teach me all the things he knows.

I <3 My Parents
