What the hell?

My mom was in a conversation on the phone with who we presumed to be one of her friends, just talking about the average things. Suddenly she says, "Oh, I must be mistaken then," drops the receiver, runs to the basement and then walks out the door and drives away. This is at 10:30 pm, mind you.

Then the phone rings again and it's her friend, who is surprised to hear she isn't home.

What just happened?
