Question Kindle, nook, or ipad or macbook?

Which would you choose? My birthday's coming up and I was given these options. I already have an iphone and an ibook (it's a g4, but it's still trucking), so I'm not so sure about the macbook, (the camera would be nice, and the ability to play games since there are very few games available for the pwerpc still) or an ipad, since I already have two devices which essentially do what it does. I know the ipad has an ereader and kindle app, but I've read since it's not a dedicated ereader, it's hard on the eyes for long periods of time. Between the kindle and nook, I'm leaning towards the nook because of a larger selection and the lending option, but I've read the os is slower than the kindle for downloading etc.

I've never had an ereader, but I do a lot of reading and spend a pretty stupid amount on books, so it would be great but I'm just not sure which is really better. The ipad is awesome, but I just don't really see getting an ipad which could be subpar for reading, with all these extra things that I can already do on my ibook or iphone. But then I'm concerned that the ipad will take over the ereader business, and then either the kindle or nook will become totally outdated and the amount of books will be limited.

Whatta ya think?

The title to this really sucks. It should've said kindle, nook, ipad or macbook.

Kindle is probably the best choice at the moment. The ipad screen is too bright for reading unless it's in short bursts; it's better for reading comic books.

The Kindle dropped to US$189 last month too so it's a good time to nab one

Macbook. Buy the books second-hand for a couple of $$$ and be the proud owner of a full bookshelf in your livingroom.

The thing is, I don't really use my ibook for much more than I would use an ipad for. I really just use it for the internet, mail, videos and flash games. I'm not in school anymore so I don't need the wordprocessing, but I've got access to two other computers if I need word processing.

But I already have an iphone so do I need an ipad?

I should have added the options I was given was ipad + nook or kindle or a macbook.

I've only ever used a kindle, and it's great.

Loads very quickly, INCREDIBLY easy on the eyes, and the price just dropped massively.

At her Christmas party, my friend showed me hers that she got for Christmas, and I then spent 2 hours reading a book on it. (Coraline, btw. Very good book) I finished the book just as quickly as I would've done otherwise, and my eyes were not strained at ALL. Amazing.

I hear the Nooks are nice, too. Their price dropped as well. I just haven't used one.

seriously. i'm pretty sure that 85% of the reason for reading is to show off to your redneck friends just how anti-anti-intellectualism you are. i don't even read four quarters of the books i buy.

I don't see the appeal of using a kindle. I sat next to someone on a flight who was using one... I guess I'm old school and would rather hold a book in my hands.

I can infer that a macbook is a laptop, but I seriously don't know what any of this crap is. Why the fuck can't people name things according to what they do? I don't want to hear about hand held devices called nookies or shprockets, just put the word 'phone' in there somehow. And if it's more than a phone, call it a mobile shitfucking multifucker apparatus or something for fuck's sake.

You guys suck. I don't see what this has to do with me want want wanting anything. I didn't say "hey I'm really selfish get me all this shit for my birthday".
Obviously I'm not on the up and up about these things or I wouldn't be running a 6 year old ibook.
I was expecting Trueblood on dvd and that was about it, but was told I could have any of these, pick which one I would prefer - and all of them are pretty expensive purchases and some of them (the e-readers in particular) I know virtually nothing about) so I was looking for some one who might have these devices to let me know what they think about them, and compared to the others which one is best.

It's not a serious problem, but I don't want to be bitch and have him spend all this money on something that neither of us will get a lot of use out of etc. Just trying to make an informed decision.

And Shaunna, quit talking so much shit - it's a program he's working on with your country's DND that'll be paying for this. Go Canada.

I have a MacBook Pro (about 3-4 years old) and I love it, it's nice to be able to tri-boot Mac OS X + Windows 7 + Ubuntu. My mother has an iPad and absolutely loves it. As for kindle and nook, I don't think i actually know anyone who has either, but my mom has no complaints about the ebook reader on the iPad, someone said it was too bright, but it has a brightness control right in the reader so you can easily turn the brightness down if necessary.
