Funny, it was 2 on 2.

This wasn't a battle either, it was a discussion. A discussion which I might add you have brough absolutely nothing to.

whoa huh what? volunteer work? nobody ever told me that volunteer work was necessary, or at least encouraged. bah. I'm looking to get into a NESCAC school (Bates, Tufts, Colby, or Bowdoin, basically). my dad went to Bates, I always make the honor roll, am in honors and AP classes, and play baseball and hockey. assuming I get a decent SAT score, how do you think I'd stack up?

Honestly.. how good are you at baseball or hockey?

I was good enough to play football for a smaller school (large 1-AAA or small 1-AA) but that's not going to help you that much.

I play varsity for one of the best hockey schools in Maine (25ish state championships, won it two years ago, lost in the semifinals last year), and Maine is a good hockey state. you see, I'd probably be good enough to play for a Division III team, such as the ones I listed (maybe not Colby, they're friggin good), so that's all that matters.

and as far as baseball goes, I could hold my own in Division III. I'm looking at a small school like that anyways, nothing Division I.

Actually, I believe it's the PSAT they let you take then. I remember I got a 1280 and went to the Princeton Review for the summer after 7th grade.

Nobody took major into account in this, which is surprisingly an important factor.

I got a 1310, good SATII scores, 3.8 GPA, and was refused into UCSD under my declared major of history.
Another girl in my class was considerably below me, and she got in under some stupid major.

If you want to get into a school with shitty scores, declare yourself an agricultural major, then change it later. It worked for this dumb bitch I knew.

But yeah, it is getting harder to get into UC schools at least--the average SAT score keeps getting higher.

Yeah, I saw a special on cable last year that the test is getting easier because parents were complaining their kids weren't doing well enough, as well as protests that it's somehow racist.

yeah i did that in 7th and 8th grade too. all the high school kids hated us. when i was in 7th grade i got higher than my sister who was a junior at that time. but for some reason my score didn't go up that much when i took them in high school. i thought since i did so well when i was younger i would be getting a 1600 in high school. um well that wasn't the case. i still was pretty happy and it got me where i wanted to go i guess.

i'm surprised they still have SATs but i guess admissions need something to rule out alot of kids with.

you guys are some weird cats but i'm sure it's changed a lot

5 years ago, i got into the #9 (at the time) college in the country w/ fair-to-good test scores, a great GPA, some extra-curriculars (football captain, officer in 2 or 3 clubs), and a little volunteer work

and i got lots of $$$

and i'm not poor by any means (just in the middle)

it was all about the interview for me...but, of course, i didn't get the big scholarships (full ride, stipend, etc) b/c those went to the handicapped black female lesbians whose mom and dad had killed themselves when the kid was 11 and who was raised by wolves in the fucking woods or some shit

One thing to remember, they "recentered" the SAT a few years back (1995 I think). So if you took it say 8 years ago (I think that's when it was) you should add 150-200 points to your score. In other words, they adjusted to test so that on average, scores are 150-200 points higher today vs. pre "recenter".

Perhaps I was a little high, this article suggests a 100 point increase, but I'm pretty sure I've seen 150-200 mentioned in more recent articles...

100 points

I read through this entire thread and was getting more and more frustrated that nobody had mentioned this yet. The SATs in general, as well as the PSATs, have been remodified so much that it's a whole different world than taking them 10, 15 years ago. When they redo the test altogether in a few years, all hell is going to break loose. I got a 1520 on the SATs two years ago, but if you take recentering into account, Nimrod's score is probably a good 50-100 points better than mine. (Edit: Or at least as good as mine. Whatever. I'm pretty sure 150 points is the average increase these days.)

As far as the SATs not being important or whatever, it really varies depending on where you're applying. Dusty was talking about the UC system earlier, but they explicitly don't place as much emphasis on standardized tests, and they let you know about that in advance. But then again, I speak from experience when I say that the SATs are pretty damn important when you're trying to get into a UNC-system school. Some admissions officers I've talked to flat-out told me that standardized tests are the second most important thing in your application behind your high school schedule/grades/class rank and are more important than extracurriculars or even your application essay.

And it's not that the average SAT score keeps going up. It's not going up that noticeably if at all, if I remember correctly, because more people are taking the test, and while that means there's more kids toward the higher end of the spectrum competing for the same amount of spots in a school/scholarships, it also means there's more kids toward the lower end dragging the average down.
