For about the last six years, I've gone through bouts of insomnia every spring like clockwork. During those time periods, I stay up around 30 hours or so fairly regularly.

Three years ago this tendency lined up with a flight from New Zealand back home to western New York. The combination of not being able to sleep on planes and a complete inability to fall asleep period was pretty devastating. The day after I got back home and was finally ready to pass out, I added up all the time since I had last got some shut-eye, and it was somewhere between 55 and 57 hours.

While that was the longest stretch I've ever gone without any sleep, it still wasn't my worst bout of insomnia. Last year around the same time I went through a 22 day stretch with an abhorrently small amount of sleep. I wasn't keeping track the first four days or so, but after that I started to write down my nightly totals from the 5th night on. In the 17 day period I did keep track of (408 hours), I slept a total of about 19 hours, or 117 hours less than normal. I've never felt more miserable, more pissed off, more unhealthy, and more legitimately concerned for my own well-being in my entire life. On one of the last days, I remember walking from my car to class in the morning, blinking, and then being mid-drive home on some back country road 8 hours later. If I'm remembering my days correctly, I cried myself to an hour of sleep that night.

i think it was about 34 hours. i was in middle school and just drank a lot of coke and hung out with my brother and his friends for the first day and night, then a pool party, after which i promptly passed out for about 14 hours.
