I don't know awesome the iPad would be as an e-book reader.

1) it has a backlight--those suck to read on for more than 30 minutes

2) the backlight screen means it eats through batteries

I have a Kindle... that thing will last for 2 weeks between charges (with 3G internet off). That means that I don't really have to bring a charger with me when I travel... I can imagine sitting with my iPad in the airport huddled on the floor so I could plug it in to a nearby power outlet.

It still lasts 10 hours of use. That's reasonably impressive and would mean that you'd probably have to bring a charger, but you'd only have to plug it in while you slept.

If I could be sure that the backlight reading wouldn't kill me, then I can maybe see the value of this thing for someone who has lots of disposable income.

nono - they're sort of aiming at the college market here, there's going to be textbooks on itunes etc. uh, did you not go to college? remember big bags fulla books? my backpack was routinely 22lbs when i was at high school.

have you even seen a kindle/nook/sony reader screen? it looks like paper. its like reading off an epic verison of a nintendo gameboy or something. there isnt a backlight.

I don't agree with this.

Everyone has phones. Everyone has portable music players. Not everyone wants some not-quite-e-reader, not-quite-laptop giant sized iPod touch.
