Why do teachers assign things like this?

"Think of something that you have accomplished and describe the accomplishment (and what led up to it) in the style of Robinson Crusoe. You might choose to describe something small and everyday, like making yourself lunch, getting up and walking to class, writing a paper, etc.; or something large, like running a marathon, winning a sporting event, making a profound realization about yourself or your future, etc. Be sure to model your description on specific passages in Robinson Crusoe.
