Recently there have been two high-profile cases of male lab workers committing horrific violence against females in those labs. It has occurred to me that females in the vicinity of dean_r_koontz and ATS could be in mortal danger. A little background:

First there is Raymond Clark III, the technician at a Yale University lab. By accounts of coworkers and landlords, he very controlling. After confronting Yale University grad student Annie Le about conditions of mice cages in the lab this summer (ATS has shown an affinity for mice, interesting...), he brutally murdered her via strangulation five days before her wedding, and tried to cover up the crime by stuffing her 90 lb. corpse into a wall. Very savage. The body was discovered on September 13, 2009, which was to be her wedding day. DNA evidence, a failed polygraph, and other forensic evidence (timing of swipes of id cards to enter areas of the lab, etc.) indicates a very compelling case.

Even more recently, Damon Thompson allegedly made a horriffic attack against a woman in a UCLA chemistry lab. The allegation is that he brutally slashed the woman's throat and stabbed her several times. The woman, a fellow UCLA student, is thankfully and miraculously still alive, though very seriously wounded and recovering. Truly horrifying violence, again against a woman at the hands of a male lab worker.

I fear that dean_r_koontz and ATS, two frightenly misanthropic and misogynistic lab workers, might post a very real danger to the females around them. Supporting arguments are as follows:

dean_r_koontz recently detailed an incident in his lab in which he became quite upset at a female in a lab. He himself admitted that he fears the women there see him as a person who might rape them. He has made recent posts showing a strong disrespect for or even a hatred of females, and also indicating a very unstable mental state. Both he and ATS in this thread angrily referred to women as BITCHES. I wish there were some way to warn these poor woman. I will feel terrible if he does end up savagely attacking her or another woman for any number of imagined slights transformed into grave affronts by his sickly mind.

There is less urgency in the case of ATS, though here too I am deeply concerned. ATS has made no attempt to hide his fawning and deferential regard for dean_r_koontz. He sees him as a kindred spirit, misunderstood and unappreciated by society in general, and sometimes women specifically. dean_r_koontz has corroborated the idea that these two see themselves as misunderstood outcasts thusly: "people like me and ATS don't care that much because we're not into social interactions irl anyway." These two often stick up for eachother in an "us against the world" fashion that further tips their scale in the direction of misanthropy.

These types of feelings are all too commonly exhibited by perpetrators of tragic violence against their peers (see any number of school shootings, workplace killings, etc.) I fear that in his weak and twisted mind, ATS might conceive that an attack against a woman in a lab would honor or please dean_r_koontz greatly. At the very least, there is a high-risk for a copy-cat crime, should dean_r_koontz lose his cool and give into his dark, blood-filled desires.


An interesting quote from a relative of Damon Thompson: "He cares about what people think about him too much," Williams told the Los Angeles Times. Placing importance on how other perceive him is a common thread in many of dean_r_koontz's posts. He recently made a poll soliciting opinions about himself. While ATS is more subtle about it, he is very quick to react in an aggressive manner when he perceives a slight.


I had to do some reading and thought to try to understand what is driving all of this. I think that the danger stems from the idea of control. They are likely frustrated and perhaps emasculated to see that females have some power over them. dean_r_koontz didn't even really do very much wrong, and suddenly he is feeling like a rapist. That would frustrate anyone. You simply can't control what another person thinks or feels. As happens in these cases, brutal violence is sometimes used to assert control, often with deadly consequences.

The commonalities are too many and too strong to ignore. I am asking the Netphorian community at large to help me think about what can be done to protect the safety of the women in the midst of these two ticking time bombs. Getting out in front of this could save lives. This is about safety, and I implore you to think constructively with me about what can be done here.

I think in some scientific disciplines, not physics of course, men develop certain eugenics-like dispositions towards the opposite sex, perhaps believing women are in some way biologically inferior to men. Then believing their misogyny is backed by science and implicitly condoned by rational minds, they feel their acts of violence are sanctioned.

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything we can do to stop these two netphorian monsters unless we had some female scientist go undercover and work with them, catching/stopping them in the act. But who could we possibly send? If she died, her blood would be on our hands.
