I pretty much only absorbed what I listen to from my dad.

I'm pretty big on John Coltrane, but he is very much an acquired taste, once you figure out what the hell he's doing you'll see his brilliance.

I'm more into the fusion era though, like John Maclaughlin, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, that type of thing.
