i havn't read this whole thread or anything, but i'm pretty sure you just proved his point ... the logic doesn't make sense.

you don't seem to understand what im saying.

the closest you could ever come to understanding my definition of happiness, sadness (or any emotion for that matter) would be me telling you about my experiences and how I reacted to them, and you recalling similar experiences and how you reacted to them. our justifications for those actions and reactions are our emotions.

naturally, there are discrepancies with this system. when people are exposed to certain things, they can react emotionally many different ways.

While piles of cold hard cash may mean absolutely nothing to you, it may fill my heart up with glee.

Just beacuse it means nothing to you, don't mean it means nothing to me. I respect your minimalist approach to achieving enlightenment, but it doesn't work for me. Don't tell me that money doesn't make me happy, because as far as I'm concerned, you don't know what happy is.

capice?

HOW SO? It makes perfect sense.

1. There is suffering
2. Suffering is caused by craving and aversion
3. True Happiness is possible
4. True happiness is the ceasation of suffering.

****** is saying that true happiness must be OBTAINED (in this
case through the accumulation of wealth), but on further inspection
this is merely SECURITY. Security is born out of FEAR

so by his logic; FEAR = HAPPINESS

Yeah, I understand. And if I were really doing this right, I wouldn't
be forcing this view on you.

That's where your theory loses its logic.

I didn't realize that being scared of having no money and not being able to support my family is a bad thing.

Money=Food, Shelter, Clothing=Happiness, when compared to how I feel when I don't have it.

Fear isn't a bad thing. It's natural. And having security makes me happy. It makes a stable family. It makes a stress free environment. Money pays rent.

Shut up.

Thumbs up

"There are Four Noble Truths. These are:

1)The truth of Suffering,
2)The truth of the origin of suffering,
3)The truth of the cessation of suffering,
and 4) The truth of the path leading to this cessation.

Within the Four Truths, we find two distinct sets of cause and result operating: suffering is the result, and the origin of suffering is its cause; in like manner, the true cessation of suffering is peace, the result, and the path leading to it is the cause of peace.

The happiness we seek, a genuine lasting peace and happiness, can be attained only through the purification of our minds. This is possible if we cut the root cause of all suffering and misery -- our fundamental ignorance. This freedom from suffering, the true cessation, can come about only when we have successfully seen through the illusion created by our habitual tendencey to grasp at the intrinsic existence of phenomena and, thereby, gained insight that penetrates into the ultimate nature of reality."

-Excerpts from the book The World of Tibetan Buddhism: An Overview of Its Philosophy and Practice, by Dalai Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho.

don't go to art school. ha.

i don't know if i'm going to find a job. the economy's shit; i'm graduating in less than 3 months. i have 2 internships, and i might be able to get a job through those, but who knows? i'll be lucky to get what i get.

i still say the most important things is connections (gained through networking) than education. well. ok. let me rephrase. education is a given, i mean, you have to have it for a lot of things, but education alone will not get you the job.

i'm with ****** - money makes me happy. it's certainly not the ONLY thing that makes me happy, but it solves a lot of problems for me. and i like to buy clothes. *shrug*

also, i'm curious as to what Nimrod's Son does for a living. And how much he makes. I'm pretty nosey.

I'm going to school right now. I don't particularly *want* to be in school right now, and i'm not very motivated. However, my parents are INSISTING that I get a degree, any degree, and then I can do whatever with my life. That way I have "something to fall back on." And they're covering all my costs (room, board, car payments, car insurance, medical insurance) so long as I'm enrolled in school. So going to school actually makes things less stressful, i guess. I don't want to be there, but on the other hand I don't want to be paying for my car and medical and an apartment and stuff.
They pay for school, too. I guess everyone's circumstances are different.

uhm. this sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before (ok, i dun mean that, but i don't think i've ever posted anything serious and stuff around here. bleh.) that "don't go to art school" thing is so wrong. i am in art school. i happen to be really good at it. i don't think that i could ever be happy doing something else (haha. HAPPY). my mom always told me: "don't do anything that you don't like". she's fuckin right. GO TO ART SCHOOL IF YOU ARE GOOD AT IT AND YOU LIKE IT.
this is gonna sound kinda... hippie... ish: stuff that you like makes you happy. being good at something makes you happy.
and besides. art ppl are the coolest.

Throughout the years I have acquired much skill at going to art school. Hell, I'd even say that I'm good at going to art school.
