Question do you think this is unfair?

i'm currently taking a class "approaches to literature"..which consists of lots of writing, reading and analyzing. not the funnest thing, but it's required to graduate
turns out out teacher, has given us every single story and novel to read, about the holocaust
now, i understand it's important to document oneself on such horrid event, and read stories of people that went thru it....but ot make the entire summer class about the holocaust?
we have 7 short stories, and 3 novels to read...and all about the same subject
i think the class should've just been called approaches to the holocaust then....
is this unfair in me thinking this?
:erm

Is "Night" one of them? Because that's a good book.

I can hardly think of a worse way to spend your summer. I can understand including holocaust lit, but DAMN a whole class?

Then again, did you just get roped into taking this because you put it off til summer? Had you taken it during regular semester could you have chosen another topic?

i wanted to take the remainder of the general ed. classes that i need as requisites during the summer, cos it's shorter time...and i'd rather take my good classes (like studio classes..photography, etc) in the regular semester cos i have more time to concentrate into what i really wanna do.
i don't think you have a choice regarding the subject, it just depends on the teacher you get

Assuming he's going to be choosing works that deal with the Holocaust in different ways and works that are written differently as far as stylistics go, I don't see what the problem is--he'll still be teaching different literary approaches, which is the point of the class.

well all the works deal with holocaust victims, and i think he's approaching everywork the same way
i don't really see a difference

I had a class JUST like that, except it was called Socio-Research Methods in Law or something confusing like that. EVERYTHING we did--videos, readings, anything--was about the death penalty. It was a HORRIBLE, depressing quarter. I'm sorry.

Teachers get their little pet peeve causes that they try to champion and push on students.

It sucks that you have to go through it, but as for being unfair, no. The course is approaches to literature, and he can use the holocaust to illustrate how different authors take different approaches to the same subject. It's a boring and depressing subject, but not unfair.

On an unrelated note, does your professor wear a yarmukle?

I think that you should tell your teacher that the syllabus is biased and unless she allows Neo-Nazi works of literature to be added that you will sue the school system.

When I was informed of the holocaust I was young and misinformed. I felt so bad for the Jewish People that I wanted to go to Israel and help the cause. After talking to my peers and teachers, I decided to do the next best thing. I joined the Navy. What a fucking mistake. Oh well at least I get benefits years later.

Definitely. Supposedly the author lives in South Beach or something last I heard and visited my high school one time. (So I've heard).

Anyway, Cat, I'm sorry to hear about that. Shit like that, the Prof. should have specified that s/he is using a certain theme. I don't know if it's fair or not, but I think you should have had an advanced warning that it's going to be all based on this one theme. I had a Lit class that specified what theme it was. Or maybe you should have gone out of your way to check out the Prof. and inquire about the class, although I myself never do that even though I know I probably should.

Oh, well. For some strange reason I like learning about the holocaust and holocaust literature. Sometimes it's just fascinating.
