Default Religious Questioning...

So I've been going out with my girlfriend for well over a year now and she's Latter-Dat Saint. At first she really layed off the whole religion subject, as I'm sure she figured it would scare me away. As time went by she'd start mentioning it more and more and now it's to the point where it's obvious that she's trying to get me to convert. I've been Catholic my whole life (more and less devout throughout different times of my life) so it's been quite tough waying in my beliefs against hers and figuring which I really do believe.

So I've gone to her church maybe 5 or 6 times and am going again tomorrow morning. I've also looked into it by reading some of the Book of Mormon and finding other teachings from various sources. Sometimes the stuff they say sounds really good and makes alot of sense to me. But at the same time, I'm not sure if I'm ready to mellow out my life enough to become LDS. It's such a huge commitment. And then there's the whole subject in my head of whether her religion really sounds good to me or if it sounds good because I want to be with her.

I'm not really sure what kind of advice I can get on this subject from a message board but I needed to get it out and see what others thought.

maybe you should talk to me... seeign as how I have exaustive experience with the LDS church, their members, and checkered past.

Looks liek you'll get two viewpoints. How ideal.

I went to school with a bunch of Mormons and for a while, my best friend was Mormon. She was a wonderful person (a little clueless, but really nice). Then she started talking LDS in every other fucking sentence and pushed that shit on me all the time. The end.

oh yeah, thats the tough part. good luck figuring that out.
Just don't allow yourself to lie to yourself. If you guys break up a few months or years later, you'll regret what you did to yourself just for her.

Yea, two viewpoints would be very good. It seems as if pretty much whereever I go there's gonna be a bias one way or the other. I guess that's how it is with anything really, but the bias towards this religion seems to be faily extreme either way.

don't mormons follow you around if you leave their church?
don't they have all your info, like address and all that crap?

my mom was telling me that some lady came to her (baptist) church and two mormons in suits sat in the back and were basically followng her because she tried to leave the (mormon) church.

Let me put it this way -- especially with the more secretive/cult-like religions (notice I did not say "cult") like the Watchtower, and Latter Day Saints, Southern Baptists, ect... relationships just don't work. Even if you converted, you know that deep down it would be for her and not out of some desire to save your soul. SO really your only job is to de-convert her or to break up with her.

Trust me man, I have studied the thing up and down, and some of my best pals are Mormon. The organization is totalitarian. They keep copies of all your files, all your vital info, social security #, everything. They require a ten percent tax. And if you ever try and leave the church you will have to move and keep a low profile because they will come after you.

The spiritual side of it is a whole other matter and I'm not really going to bring it up unless it is absolutely necessary.

Here is just the most recent article I have clipped on the LDS:

Are you planning on marrying her? Is that why you're thinking about converting? Because converting for someone you're just dating (even if you've been dating for a while) seems a little strange.

I really don't have any suggestions. All I can say is good luck. If you don't feel like you should do it, then don't do it. If you have any major reservations, take a step back and take a look at everything it will involve. Like some others have said, it's not that easy to just walk away from the Mormon Church.
hmm. I will most likely convert to catholicism when my boyfriend and I get married... just to make things easier between us and any future children, since I am an "estranged" s. baptist, not really practicing or anything and he is a mucho strong catholic.

Anyway, good luck.

This is a bit of an easier conversion because the essentials of biblical christianity and catholicism can be the same -- the trinity, salvation by grace, virgin birth, ect...

I think that a christian can become a Catholic as long as they keep the sacrements of the catholic church symbolic and don't rely on them for salvation and that they keep their Salvation based on grace and not on works.

Right. We've gotten into arguments/discussions about this in the past. We both try not to bring up the whole "symbolism" thing... because it does cause issues... he'll take it for what it is to him, and I will for what it is for me as well, and then we're both good.

It's true. My mom used to be mormon but she quit a little after I was born & she still gets birthday cards & shit from them. The weird part is that we've moved maybe 4 or 5 times since she quit the church.

Seriously man, you go to that wackjob later day saint stuff so you can marry your cousin or crazy shit like that, we’ll excommunicate your ass and then send our goons after you.
