Question hard drive question

is there a chance that my mobo might not support a 120gig hd? i have no idea what the motherboard is, but it's a dell demension 4100 which came with a P3 1Ghz processor. it's showing up in the bios properly, and in windows device manager, it just won't show up as a drive in 'my computer'.

Did you format it through either DOS or Disk Management?

i didn't format it at all. it's brand new. i just plugged 'er in and exepected it to work as i've done with countless harddrives before. perhaps i should pop in the floppy disk that came with it.

just for some reason, i can recall some people had problems with 120giggers when they first came out, so i thought perhaps i'm having the same issue.

If the BIOS recognies it you should be fine. Yes, as has been said you will need to format it, but first youll need to partition it (most likely) using FDISK or Partition Magic.

yeah, i just forgot to format. it's been quite a while since i've delt with a new hard drive and i've swapped so many used ones around that i forgot that they don't come formatted or partitioned.

It's usually a waste of time if they do. How do they know if you want it as one drive or two, and whether to make it FAT32 or NTFS? The old conventions just don't work anymore.
