My friend's computer won't boot

When he turns it on, it goes to the startup screen as usual, but then his harddrive starts ticking, as if it's hitting something as it spins. Then it says something about there being a non-system disk inserted in the drive, though there's no fucking CDs or floppies in his computer at the time. We tried running scandisk via a bootdisk, but it didn't work...when we tried running it on the C drive, it was apparent that the program was creating its own C drive.

His harddrive seems fucked....So much for downloading the movies we wanted.
