peace corps

so i'm thinking i'm going to join the peace corps when i graduate from college this spring. do you guys have friends or family who participated in it? i'm trying to collect stories to see if there are a lot of horrible or positive aspects that i haven't considered.

I've never known anyone to do it. It's strange. As much as I know that it's rewarding for a lot of people, I can't see myself ever doing it.

My best friend from college just got back from two years teaching English in Romania. She is also real close to her PC friends so she has their stories as well as hers.

I'd be glad to provide her e-mail addy if you are interested in asking her questions. But before putting her e-mail on this board I would wanna know if you would actually e-mail her.

Not trying to be rude. She just gives me enough crap about being addicted to a message board as it is. So before putting her addreess out there I'd just like to know that it will be used for a good purpose.

She loves to talk about her experience in the PC and would surely be a good person to talk to.

ooh! I'm thinking of going into it, too. I graduate next summer

and i'm going to a meeting tomorrow. I'll ressurrect this thread to tell you how it went. I'm actually worried about not getting in if i decide to go for it seeing as it's so competitive. I don't have a lot of volunteering experience, so that worries me. The only jobs i've had are retail, so basically the only thing I have to go on is good grades, the little bit of travel i've done, and the tutoring i'm doing right now.

what country do you want to go to? Region/whatever. does it matter?

You need one year of volunteer experience while you are in college to qualify, right?

That's how it was when I applied a couple years ago.

As long as you have that one year you should be okay as far as that aspect of the application goes.

Maybe the PC policy has changed but I just thought I'd mention that.

good to know. i've just started mine in the last couple months, but by the time they're actually deciding whether or not to take me it'll be a year.
