Even CMU makes their engineering students take a "morality" class.

a lot of universities have a lot of general requirements for everyone (i know yale and brown don't, but every other school I know anything about has a bunch). one of my complaints freshman year was that we had too many of those, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea. they think that it allows everyone to get a taste of everything before deciding on a field of study. It's worked out ok. I got the vast majority of them out of the way in my first year.

i guess it has its advantages but the general consensus here is that you would be "prepared" for tertiary education by the qualification you need to attend uni

afterwards you're on your own with choices, and you don't usually study more than two fields

where do you live?

American high schools are so, so, so varied that they don't like to make any assumptions, I guess. But that's why they allow so much AP credit to take the place of the gen eds. Because they're standardized and give them some idea as to what you know/learned about the subject.

germany

but we like to keep our intelligentsia separated so the people who aim for a higher education are put in different schools after class 4 (differs from state to state) - i.e. about the age of 10

it's pretty ridiculous actually but fuck i would hate to be told what to take at uni

10?! Christ. That seems uh, a little young.

And you're not told exactly what to take. There are a lot of choices within each subject matter. Generally you can find something you're interested in.

this is so true. I forget the name of the group, but these people came to UTSA and had pictures that were probably almost two stories tall. The people were picking students out of the crowd as they were walking to classes and would yell shit at them. I was pretty surprised they were scolding people at random... what if the kid they were yelling at was pro-life?
A lot of the shit these people were saying was appalling, and the way they conducted themselves was even more so appalling. it was a strange day on campus.

... whenever a president speaks there will be protesters unaffiliated with the university... really, why is that some sort of revelation for you? I man fuck, Code Pink was an organization devoted to following Bush wherever he went

On April 28th 2007 George W. Bush gave the Commencement Address at the Kendall Campus of Miami-Dade College. Many of the students graduating from the college were outraged that Bush was chosen as the addressee and refused to attend. Disappointment with Miami-Dade College spread throughout the South Florida activist community which led to this protest.

Somewhere between 600 and 1000 protesters were reported to have attended and a great majority of the protesters were voicing out against the Iraq war. There were also people protesting for immigration reform, women's reproductive rights and many calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush.

There were somewhere between 10 or 15 pro-Bush supporters which is a big decline from past rallies I've attended in South Florida. Bush has generally had favorable support in Miami-Dade County, especially from the Cuban community. If you'd like to see larger versions of these photos please click HERE.

eh. ok i see your point. but if that had been 2001 and not 2007, i seriously doubt you would have seen all of that. I don't think this is exactly the same. Where are the massive protests at ASU and the Naval Academy?

what bothers me is that this is all occurring because of one particular political stance. we have had plenty of pro-choice, non-catholic, etc. commencement speakers before. i just don't understand why this has developed into some firestorm.

probably 'cause he's black.

could it be because many liberals are a lazy bunch who wait until it's public opinion to complain openly?

or maybe it's just because he didn't seem as much of a threat back then. whatever i guess

Bush, a proponent of the death penalty, spoke at ND without incident. The liberals and the Catholics all left him alone.

But Obama is the socialist scourge of humanity.
