Since it appears you are in Canada, go to www.tigerdirect.ca and click on "recertified." Here is how they describe recertified
Factory Recertified A product is considered "Factory Recertified" if it is shipped to a customer, by the manufacturer, and is not accepted by the customer. The shipment may have been made in error, or the customer decides not to complete the transaction. The merchandise is returned to the manufacturer, unused. However it may not be re-sold as "new." The manufacturer inspects and tests the merchandise for damage, missing parts, etc . The manufacturer then offers the merchandise for sale as "recertified." Recertified merchandise from a manufacturer may be repaired, re-packaged, etc., and considered "like new." I recommend buying this: IBM ThinkPad T20 / Intel Pentium III 700MHz / 128MB / 12GB / DVD / 14.1" XGA / Windows 2000 Professional / Factory Recertified Laptop for $943CDN. c |

OK, since I now have an income and all (well, I'll soon have one), I want to replace my old IBM ThinkPad with a broken screen and a broken replacement screen that works half of the time... The thing is, I don't have the money to buy a new one, at least not a recent one...
I don't need anything too fancy or powerful... hell, if I could I would probably buy the same one, only maybe with a larger HD and a better sound card... So yeah, it can be old and weak (well, in relation to newer models) but work well... it can be used, but in good shape... I suppose paying 500$ for a laptop is near impossible, right? |

if you're looking for something similar to what you have/had, maybe you should start off w/ listing the specs on that one. $500 can get you a half decent book, depending on what half decent is to you.

oh yeah, I should have said what I have... good point
I don't know much about specs, but I bought it in August 1999 so it IS old...IBM Think Pad (iSeries) Pentium 350MHz 2 HDs, total of 5GB Generic sound card, speakers, etc. (I have not upgraded anything) Windows 98 I need a diskette and CD drive (duh) as well as a network card and earphone and mic-in plugs... Any idea where I could look? (online or elsewhere) I'm looking for something a little better, but I don't necessarily need 2GHz and 40GB... (700MHz and 10GB are looking damn good right now, but I can settle for less) |

You might find good deals on ebay for something in that pricerange. you're not going to find anything new that's decent for $500.
my suggestion? get a desktop if at all possible. laptop hardware dies quickly, and it's harder to add/take from it. I learned the hard way by spending $1200 on one. |

Spend a little more and get a warantee. Or, just get yours fixed. Take it to a laptop repair shop.
