I believe that if we all had equal opportunities as far as education was concerned we'd all pretty much be equally intelligent. Of course there's alway the exception.

Look at how things have changed since women were seen as intellectually inferior to men. Now we're all aware that this was because the same opportunities were not open to women not that they were any less intelligent. So doesn't the same thing apply to difference races?

I for one know that there are plenty of black people who are smarter than me.

Screw generalizations.

Just overheard a conversation where one person asked another (paraphrasing) "you accept that black people are generally the fastest athletes, and that asian people are generally smaller in stature. you accept that years of breeding made certain dogs better hunters than others. Why then do you say it is racist of me if I believe white people in general are better at something? Is it just because I said 'smarter' and there's no way to define that without the tests being biased?"

Discuss. Who is correct?

Generalizations are usually true. It's kind of sad, but people do generally tend to go with the flow. Ask 50 black people what kind of drink they get when they go to McDonald's, and I'd say at least 40 of them would say lemonade or orange hi-c. Ask 50 asians the same question, and the overwhelming response would be sprite. White people? Coke.

Yeah, and I fit right into that generalization.

And to answer your question, neither of them are correct. They're just generalizations and both are prone to flaws in their logic.

Well everything you mentioned is a physical trait, whereas intelligence is affected my many other factors, and as far as I'm concerned isn't entirely genetic. Plus, it's easy to rate someone as being the fastest, because it's a clearly defined absolute. How exactly do you define intelligence?

Um, yeah, intelligence is partly hereditary and somewhat dependant upon other developmental skills.

Notice that I didn't say that one race was in fact more intelligent than another, I simply stated that raw intellect is genetic.

Well truth be told years ago when I worked at McDonald's, the black people did order a lot more orange and strawberry soda than the white folk. I don't think a black person ever wanted a diet anything from me either.

But there are many social factors involved - education for one. Since there aren't really any 'intelligence competitions' the only way you can assess intelligence is to study different samples of the population, which would be impossible to do fairly without allowing other factors to color the results. Besides, no matter what their hereditary traits a person is not going to do well on these tests unless they're good at very specific tasks, like visualizing space. Being able to pass these tests doesn't necessarily make someone 'smart' - like I said, it's relative
