no doubt a lot of environmentalism today has the gloss of a fad, the people who trumpet it are often just insufferable on a personal level, and the rhetoric used to justify it is often too romantic or hazy or just otherwise annoying.

but, frankly, you have to be a fucking moron to let stuff like this determine your actions on these questions. the answers to questions over whether or not we should use cloth bags, conserve energy, take public transit, etc, have nothing to do with how cool or uncool environmentalism is, how annoying some environmentalists are, or whatever else. to focus on the latter is to react more to enviromentalism as "fashion" (its too cool to be cool anymore now, its a faux pas to concern yourself with it) than as an actual substantive issue.

reminds me of how, back during the nadir of the bush era (2004), when everyone and their mother was frothing at the mouth about george bush, there were hipsters who would kind of refuse to voice such criticism themselves because to do so would be uncool. one of the editors of vice even became an outright conservative, as i recall, just becuase all of the kids with "FUCK BUSH" written on their backpacks had kind of made it uncool to be highly critical of bush.

no doubt those kids (and sheehan and the like) are embarrassing, but that can never be something that trumps the actual needs of the issue itself.
