I don't know why publicity departments still continue to use taglines for their posters. They're so ridiculously vague and stupid they can only be a disservice to the movie it's trying to promote. Personally I only pay attention to the "a film by..." credit line.

meh, it can be creatively done. I kinda liked Clerk's tagline "Just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you." or just the Matrix's "What is the Matrix" was a pretty good one that reflected the mystery of the flick. Or Blair Witch's "In 1998 three campers went missing, a year later thier footage was found". Regardless of the relative crappiness or goodness of abovementioned flicks, I still think they were good twists that reflected the flicks themselves. But, on the whole 90% of taglines suck balls.

Not exactly a real tag line, but it really irritates me that nowadays every fucking trailer has the "only in cinemas" bit, everyone knows there's gonna be a fuckin'-collectors-only-special-extended-edition-dvd-with-the-gaffer's-commentary package out of every movie in like six months...

the blair witch tagline isn't that bad at all since it does help set up the premise of the movie. In fact, the whole marketing scheme for that movie has to be the best in film history. But for the most part, taglines are either self referential bits that only mean something if you're already familiar with the movie, or just fucking stupid- like the one beautiful loser posted above. Really I can't recall anybody being sold on a movie through a tagline. I'm just surprised that they're still around. Amazing. Must... see... movie... It's not the money... it is the money... must see movie.
