Thumbs down Mr. America. (WWE Smackdown spoiler)

It's about to come on, but I bet you $10 it's Hulk Hogan in a fucking mask. And that cues the end of my watching it anymore.

EVERYONE ON SMACKDOWN SUCKS BALLS

I might still watch Raw. If they get rid of Bischoff. And only if.

warning: long, poorly written rant to follow.

brock lesnar might still be a little green, and the nbt working another ppv match with the big show might result in boredom, but the man does not suck. he's already a solid, constantly improving worker, and his character is coming along (though his actions tonight set that back considerably).

i will not stand back and let the smackdown roster be assaulted so. smackdown is home to the best technical wrestlers in the business (los guerrerros, chirs benoit, kurt angle, etc), a solid and varried lineup of tragically underutilized cruiserweights (rey j, tajiri, funaki, kendrick, moore, noble, nunzio, etc.), future greats from ovw (lesnar, cena, team angle), and various others who might not fit into the above categories but have tons to offer (matt hardy, edge, rhyno, etc.).

the problem with smackdown (which, up until a month ago, was the best tv product the wwe has produced since the late 90's) is that they're putting emphasis on the wrong things. what made the show so good was they delivered great matches week after week with just enough story to hold it together. even with edge and angle out, smackdown should be a lock every week, but borderline-retarded booking is bringing it down. the cruiserweight belt is on a non-cruiserweight (matt hardy doesn't even wrestle like a crusierweight, not even close). the cruiserweights should be having meaningful matches on a weekly basis centered around the belt and hardy should be mixing it up with guys his own size, instead matt hardy holds the belt almost as a secondary angle to the mattitude stuff and the cruiserweights are fodder for big, worthless assholes. said big men (show, demott, jones, rikishi, albert) are dominating the upper-part of the card and eat up almost as much tv time as they do fried chicken. the ridiculous women's angles are also given way too large a share of the 2 hour show, they get twice the time raw's highly-talented women do and they can't even wrestle. hogan is going nowhere fast and piper (who is a shell of his former self) will be waiting for him when he arrives. speaking of piper: can you believe they scrapped sean o'haire's awesome manipulator angle and stuck him with the bloated scotsman? i have to admit piper drops the occasional nugget of comedy gold (like tonight when he harpooned jericho), but seeing the former master of ring-psychology wander around the apron like a lost old man on sunday almost brought me to tears (that and his blatant hypocracy even working for wwe, let alone in an angle with rikishi). and with undertaker still collecting his dues there's a noticible "triple h effect" where everyone looks weak because taker won't put anyone over. last week's title match was a prime example: cena needed three guys with chairs to help him get past an already injured undertaker on his way to brock, and we're supposed to believe cena's a threat for the title? furthermore cena beat benoit clean after the taker incident making benoit (who remains over despite those stupid fucking "toothless agression" shirts) look like shit as well.

I've never been a Lesnar fan. I never will either. His build up was lame (aka Goldberg). He won the title way too soon in his career.

I was actually entertained by Mr. America. Go figure. The whole segment was good, in my opinion.

But now they'll just run it into the ground and it will be annoying.

don't get me wrong, i thought the mr. america segment itself was good. sure it exactly what i expected it would be, but executed quite well. some greater than normal suspension of reality is required to get past the whole "getting a second contract with a company without your true identity being revealed" thing, but it's certainly not the worst contract angle that wrestling fans have been asked to believe. it was fun, it brought back hogan and it gave him something fresh to work with. seeing hogan in red, white and blue (with a mask no less) was almost as odd as seeing him in black and white for the first time.

but where does it go? hogan/vince II? hogan/piper XXXVIII? hogan/o'haire? neither is all that appealing. hulk hogan with a fresh angle is still hulk hogan. he's had as many comebacks as he has matches this past year. he cuts long, cookie-cutter promos on a near weekly basis and when he does get in the ring it's only enjoyable because of the nostalgia factor.

sure it was good segment, but, in terms of building for the future, it was the most recent bad move in a very long series of bad moves for the wwe.

Hogan/Dusty Rhodes vs. Flair/Piper would rule!

I completely agree with you. I wouldn't think the whole thing was shit IF they would market it correctly. I think they kicked Benoit in the balls by making him lose to Cena... that just.... GRRR.
