Question Favorite Kubrick movie?

Just saw Full Metal Jacket in my film class and i'm mentally re-living all of his movies that i"ve seen... what an awesome director.

I'd have to say htat FMJ is my favorite of his. In class we were talking about the unity of opposites and oxymorons that are manifested in the characters and how it's essential in order to survive mentally in a wartime situation. Joker's "Born to Kill" helmet w/peace button, Cowboy's wearing of the confederate flag with a pic of Lincoln on top of it (notice he gets killed by a sniper as well)... and then the constant reminder that the war is training kids to kill on BOTH sides (the sniper is a young woman) which is represented by the constant popups of the Mickey Mouse images and songs... just awesome movie.

I also have a special place in my heart for Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. That final scene with the crazy cowboy riding the bomb to its and civilization's doom is just too timely.

Full Metal Jacket easily ...

I wasn't a huge fan of his take on A Clockwork Orange myself ... one of those films not bieng able to do justice to a brilliant book type affairs

The Killing is extremely cool; Kubrick totally blows just about every genre out of the water and noir/crime is no exception.

My favorite though, is Eyes Wide Shut, and I couldn't tell you why. Maybe it is because we'll never know if that is how he intended it, maybe it is because I was just expecting something different, I don't know. It really amazed me.

we are discussing "a clockwork orange" in my humanities class. the lecturer has taught us a lot of very interesting things about the film, most of them having to do with the imagery and music kubrick chose.
i have a midterm in that class tomorrow though, and my brain has turned to mush on the subject.

my favorite too. i've met few people who truly appreciate this movie. i thought it was brilliant, and grossly dismissed. my second favorite has to be full metal jacket, though.

oh jesus. forgot about the shining.
FMJ is still #1, though.

An interesting thing about CLockwork... did you know that is' just about the only movie that's shown from the subjective viewpoint of the main character the entire time? Lots of movies use subjective imagery and scenes (like citizen kane and the first shot where it shows the snow on the screen while he's lying in bed dying... suggesting that thoughts of his youth/rosebud are on his mind) but movies don't do it the whole way through because it tends to be very confusing to the viewer. Novels do it, like Faulkner's SOund and Fury (through the VERY subjective sense of the mentally retarded boy), but in film it happens really rarely. Us as a viewer don't necessarily have the most reliable objective sense of what's happening 'cos it's distorted by Alex.
