Nah, you just can't buy the poor man-spec version to get backwards compatibility.

Well save a little longer and get the proper one then...or are you saying that there are no backward compatible PS3's at all anymore?

If you are Rich and $exy then you get the beauty of backwards compatibility. If you buy the poor version you don't get it. What don't you understand? Did you even know there are two versions?

The 40 gb version has no backward compatability.

The 80 gb has limited backward compatability via software emulation. Similar to the Xbox 360's bc, but not as well implemented.

Sony's stance on the issue:

"Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system."

Yes I did know but I was getting the impression you were saying that they'd stopped making them altogether but I guess they haven't, they just cost a bit more.

I think that's what jm9843 was saying before doing some research. The truth is that backwards compatibility is an option.

if you wanna play games, 360 would be my choice. if you want to watch movies, PS3. you can still watch high def content on the 360 by either downloading or streaming media from a pc though. PS3 does the same thing. there's just no good games for it. and its still an expensive blu-ray player, even for being the cheapest one. but yeah, i'd say 360 if you're more interested in games and the PS3 if you're more interested in owning a blu-ray player.

How could they fuck it up that much?
wait, what? it seems fine to me. what else is wrong with it?

It's like the Melee combat engine, but immersed in sludge. You can't even really fast fall... The best thing about Melee was that it was wonderfully smooth and quick, it never felt bulky for a second. Did you feel this at all when comparing the two? I really didn't like how much slower the gameplay was.

i also haven't played brawl in a few weeks now, so my frame of reference is a little fuzzy.

It's not really slap-you-in-the-face noticeable, but it's definitely there. They took out some little things like L-canceling, which sped up combat because you didn't have huge pauses after specific moves. And with characters like Link L-canceling was pretty necessary in making him a competitive character. I'm being overly critical of the new Smash, it's a nice game still, but I think I just preferred Melee. It sucks turning into an old man.

I completely disagree about the whole if you want a Blu Ray player buy a PS3, if you want gaming get a 360 nonsense. Truth is you get better graphics, more potential, will soon have far far better and more in depth games AND a Blu Ray player with the PS3. 360 owners are just annoyed that, in the long run, they bought the wrong machine. It's inevitible.

That opinion stated as fact is what compels me to call you a fanboy. Potential is worthless if its never realized, so why even crow about potential? Fact is if you look up the reviews so far on games that are on both systems, the 360 version is better more often than not. Potential huh. How many years has the PS3 been out? That's not to say that PS3 can't catch up and surpass the 360, I wouldn't be surprised if that happens...but what if it doesn't?

if you're interested in the current games out now, 360

if you're interested in the games coming down the road, ps3

Best answer in the thread so far.

This year 360 will get GTA 4 and Gears of War 2. PS3 will also get GTA as well however; it will get Metal Gear Solid 4 and eventually down the road the new Final Fantasy, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Tekken 6, Motor Storm 2....

If you are lucky enough to find a native 20 GB or native 60 GB PS3 you will get 100% backwards compatibility for PS1/PS2 games as these systems have the same emotion engine chip found in the PS2's. 40 GB and 80 GB consoles currently do not.

So let me reiterate:

If you're interested in the current games (mainly FPS) and soon to be defunct HD DVD format, buy the much cheaper 360.

If you're interested in the better games down the road and if you're interested in watching HD movies down the road, buy the PS3 (60 or 20 native for full BC).

Lightning/Fast mode actually seemed quicker to me. Online is a disappointment, no surprise there. But I doubt there are people on here that were as into the L-canceling/ wave dashing stuff like you.

I don't think I like the new method for air dodges either, how it's inertia based. L-canceling is a pretty basic technique though. Most people can do largely without wavedashing, and even I'll admit that it's clearly an unintentional part of the game. Even if wavedashing were the only thing changed about the engine, that'd be fine. But even character movements and the pace of battle have been greatly slowed down. And on Brawl even more, I thought characters were supposed to be balanced out better, but there are very very distinct tier levels still. But as for regular play, the engine's still good, but they really did slow it down.

360 may have more games out at the moment but PS3 has some real big guns to pull out.
Resident Evil 5, Tomb Raiders and GTA IV will all be on the 360. Final Fantasy has went downhill every since 10 and the 360 is getting Infinite Undiscovery (amazing looking square enix rpg) and it already has Lost Oddysey, which was written by the man who originally wrote the Final Fantasy games. It is also quite an amazing JRPG. Also Microsoft has stated that if their customer base demands a blu-ray add on, they will bring it. This was a while ago and I expect them to have a blu-ray add on by Christmas. Not to mention only the 360 has Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Left 4 Dead and quite a few more amazing exclusives.

Really the systems both have their strong and weak points. Graphics are basically equal from system to system with only minor differences apparent when you compare the two side by side. Neither really proving to be better, just slightly different in shading and colors. Online play and also the marketplace is better on the 360 at least. Either would be a good purchase but as of right now the Ps3 is counting on games in the future to prove its worth while the 360 has a rather long list of exceptional games already. Both will just keep putting out awesome games though. Sadly a few of the games that were supposed to jump start the PS3 library ended up not so well, such as Lair, Heavenly Sword and Unreal Tournament 3. They didn't sell too well compared to the hype. Either way, videogames sure are fun these days. Oh yea, Bioshock and Mass Effect are 360 only and they are worth getting the system alone.

i just met one of the main designers for devil may cry tonight! we met at a cherry blossom party and i asked him about this

he said the xbox is his preference atm but the ps3 will of course wipe the xbox clean in the near future

i asked him why and he said that alot of the effects and graphics (on both systems) hasn't been unlocked yet by developers

he said the ps3 had more area to explore

very interesting chap! he said i could preview some new games!

yeah sorry just wanted to show off
