I'm going to take a random guess here and say that Desmond is who dies in next weeks episode. I think Penny's dad will want him dead for whatever reason, and he's got him on his boat.

i think/hope Desmond is too important to the overall story for that to happen.

No kidding. I'd consider never watching the show again if they killed Desmond. Even though I've said that about other characters who died... Heh. But, it seems too soon for Desmond. His work isn't done yet (as hokey as that sounds).
