the dark dystopian take on an otherwise colorful and family-friendly video game franchise does lend a surrealist appeal to the movie one may have not noticed when they had originally watched it as a kid for silly fun. i think thats why it has a cult following (but memorably bad movies usually do)

Yeah for a kid it's a really disturbing take on mario bros. I would've liked to see them take things even farther and make an R-rated super mario bros, with yoshi eating people alive and mario splitting people's heads open by jumping on them. But oh well, it'll happen someday.

I haven't really seen an interpretation of Mario that I've liked anyway. I don't even like what Nintendo's done with him since 64 but I'm pretty much the only person in the world who feels that way.
