i'm in my brother's wedding on saturday. i'm expected to be girly and to compete with the 5 "sophisticated" north jersey girls that are in the wedding. i'm afraid to go get my makeup done but i know i can't do more than put eye shadow and mascara on. i only own lip gloss. what should i do? (guys you aren't supposed to respond) the mac counters scare me. what can i buy? meghan i'm looking at you.

i say go to the MAC counter. I did the same for my wedding, and I had no clue... so she taught me! very nice, and MAC isn't very costly.
or get it done, there's nothing to be afraid of, they are usually very very nice, and you can get it done while they do your hair! |

oh geez. wedding makeup. i know a lot about makeup, but i'm really not known for my natural, 'pretty' stuff. i tend towards more dramatic things. rarely do i do anything soft or delicate. but um. well. i suppose..if you wanted to, you could go to sephora. they give free makeovers, at least they used to, and they're pretty good ones, usually. that way you could see the way it looks on your face and then ask what products you can use and techniques, etc. um...as far as foundation and what not, if you want a really good, professional finish..start with a little almond oil and massage it into your skin. follow with a base that matches your skin tone, and apply it to your face and neck area, either with clean fingers or a sponge lightly dipped in water. then you can apply concealer in a shade a little lighter than your skin tone to your undereye area, followed by a darker concealer (one that matches your skin tone) to any red spots or uneven areas of your skin with a flat, synthetic-bristled brush. after that you apply powder, perferably with a flat puff. that helps to "seal" the makeup and give a smoother finish. if you want a more natural look, skip the foundation and just use the concealer and powder applied with a soft, large-sized brush. uh. as far as blush goes, i like a cream blush applied to the apples of the cheeks, well blended, and then followed by a lighter powder blush (applied with a medium-sized natural fiber brush), then blotted with a tissue. if you want a pretty, natural mouth, i recommend first applying a good amount of chapstick or lip balm to soften the mouth. wait a few minutes, then apply a fine layer of red lipstick (yes, red) to the lips with a small, precise lip brush. blot, reapply, and blot again. place a tissue over your mouth and brush over with the powder brush, powder *******d. this sets the lipstick, which by this time should be reduced to a rosy stain. you can also apply concealer to the lips after the balm, which is another trick to make lipstick last longer. or you can skip all that and get something like benefit's benetint or the supernatural by philosophy, which are rose-hued liquid lip stains. i don't actually find them to work all that well, but it's simpler.
ok... i will conclude with eyes momentarily and give some specific skin hints after this break. god. i'm ridiculous |

I would suggest going to the clinique counter. They're way more chilled out than the gals at the MAC counter. My roommate's sister was getting married last spring and she was a no makeup girl, and we took her to the Clinique counter and she came out looking very nice and not too made up, which I think is important if you never usually wear any makeup. Plus its not too expensive. Good luck, but you always look beautiful Julie.

ok. eyes. again. start with a base of foundation on the lids (this sets the shadow), then since this is a traditional wedding, stay with soft, warm colors that flatter your skin tone. (i don't mean to be patronizing; i'm just giving it all to you. you can decide what you want to keep and what to throw out). use a small, rounded natural-fiber brush and 'swirl' soft powder shadows on the lid, browbone and crease. a pale, translucent ivory is always nice on the brow, as it adds a highlight. you can do whatever color you like on the lid, but you should try and go a couple shades darker or a correspondingly darker color for the crease. this doesn't have to be done too precisely, since this is powder shadow. curl your lashes then apply mascara. if you want to lashes to be extra strong, coat in a thin layer of powder before applying mascara. let dry and apply a second coat. getting little disposable mascara wands is helpful if you want clearly separated lashes. as far as brows go, you really just need to make sure they're cleaned up. you can try shaping them with a hard pencil (make sure it's an eyebrow pencil and not an eyeliner pencil-there's a big difference) or a powder dampened with water and applied with a small, angular brush.
let's see...what else ok. i recommend waiting about 15-20 minutes after you've finished your makeup to check it out and decide what to change, if anything. it takes about that long for the makeup to begin to settle on your face, and the difference is subtle but important. colors also fade, so don't be too afraid to use brighter shades at first. bring with rice paper for blotting (if you're prone to oily skin), a small mirrored powder compact, a lip brush coated in your lipstick of choice (with a cap on the end, of course), a few tissues and maybe an all-purpose small brush to blend any runny makeup (especially around the creases of the eyes, the corners of the nostrils etc). a nice, soft powder with a slight shimmer is good for highlighting brows, cheekbones, jawline and even the bridge of the nose. be careful and use it sparingly-most people don't have the perfect bone structure to carry off much shine. you can also apply a small amount of a light blush on your chin and down your nose and across the central portion of your forehead (your "T"zone) with a large brush for a soft, english rose kind of look. that's all i can think of at the moment. |

holy fuck i'm in trouble. so much makeup. so little funding and time.
ok so here's the skinny. i'm awfully pale but i have a really red face naturally so blush is out. i'm wearing contacts for the wedding which is weird for me and for some reason my eyes get 5 times bigger when i wear contacts. does eyeliner make your eyes look smaller? should i get a powder liner or forget it entirely? colors for everything confuse me. i only wear ivoryish shadow normally. and brown mascara. red lipstick? um i don't think i can pull that off. do i need a lip liner? oh god why is life so hard??!!? thanks for your help though. i need to visit some cosmetic counter today. i was in the sephora downtown last week and i don't think i remember any makeover chairs in there. damn. |

Eh, they're North Jersey girls. Just spray your hair as high as it goes in front and put on some eyeshadow with your fingers.

mm. brown mascara is fine. i prefer black, but then again, i'm not really fond of the overly natural look if you have long lashes you don't have to worry about curling them; if you don't, i recommend either the shu uemura or the shiseido curler (both sold at sephora). and um. the one sephora that i know used to do makeovers was at rockefellar center...maybe the others don't? i'm not sure. i'm not in the city enough anymore. as for the red lipstick, like i said, just make sure your lips are nice and primed and soft, then use a small brush with a creamy lipstick and apply to the natural borders of you mouth, blot, reapply, and blot. it should end up looking like a rosy pink stain. just don't use a lot of lipstick. i don't personally recommend lip liner, but if you have trouble lining your lips with just a brush and lipstick, you can always apply lip liner AFTER you've done the lipstick. this makes the line much softer and more natural looking, since lip pencils tend to be very dry. |

Just put on a little red lipstick. I think that's all you need. You'll look great!

ok so i went to the prescriptives counter looking for a lipstick and then i was attacked by the cosmetics lady. it wasn't pretty. what made it worse is that my mom was there egging her on telling her i "don't make the most of my beauty." ugh. she tried to put shiny brown lip gloss on me. brown. i'm no makeup genius but i know i don't look good in brown. she also put blush on my already red cheeks and black mascara on my top and bottom lashes? didn't putting mascara on the bottom lashes go out in the 80s? oh well. my mom bought me foundation and powder and a nice lip gloss/ lipstick duo. i'm going back to her on saturday morning. hopefully i can guide her in the proper direction. she did alright for the most part. nothing too scary. here's a goofy librarianesque pic of me post makeup attack.
