Red face i am missing like 40GB of hard drive space! please help!

it says i've used 200 of 232 GB, but i only have 160GB of files and if i select all the contents of my local disk and check the size its says there are 160GB of files...

i know there are probably some hidden files and whatnot, but 40gigs? the computer is like ten years old and running vista. perhaps that is the problem right there.

if you are running vista, you probably still have the old windows version saved as an alternative.

google a way to find that out (im sorry i dont know how to)

basically i had this problem, i had to reinstall a new windows and it gave me the option to delete the old one over the top of it.

well, within six minutes of unboxing my new laptop, i formatted the harddrive and reinstalled windows. i found 2gb that was kept from the upgrade to vista ultimate and 3gb used for hibernation mode, but aside from that there is still 40gb missing somewhere. i'm running disc defrag right now, but there is no progress bar and it says it could take minutes or hours. i did some scan disc thing which had to restart the computer and scan before it booted windows but that apparently didn't find anything.

No. This is 100% wrong. If there was a hidden partition it wouldn't list it as part of the total space in Windows. It's more likely hidden and temp files.

Irrelevant. Windows will show the available space on a partition. It was not checking the physical drive capacity, simply the partition.

true, and i made a wrong assumption that this user like most give incorrect numbers. in short to my defense i would rather be shown the problem then given information that can be miscommunicated or misunderstood
