I remember that... musta been about ten years ago, maybe more. The guy who hit him was a Canadian, charged with manslaughter... I can't remember how it turned out. I think it ended up that there was a pre-existing condition with the victim, but... i could be wrong. It was a long long time ago.

It's kind of amazing sometimes that there's only been one death in the (modern) game's history, and that was just a player falling and striking his head on the ice.

Hmmm. 1993 sometime. Retaliatory slash, the guy plead guilty to manslaughter and recieved a fine. I haven't found anything about it being a pre-existing condition, but apparently it was a pretty harmless one. Heart attack.

Don't forget about Mac T, this guy was one flying elbow away from a CNN obituary every time he touched the puck, while he continued playing into the mid-90s if I remember correctly, which was the era when concussions started becoming a real problem.

Hockey is a pretty dangerous sport and ultimately these sorts of incidents are never going to be a hundred percet preventable. Its the nature of the beast. You don't ever go to a baseball game thinking that getting sprayed with gysers of blood from a players slashed throat is an actual possibility. I think the mental toughnees of NHL players is revealed in how Malarchuck and Zednik both had the presence of mind to get off the ice with their remaining seconds of consciousness instead of panicking. If Zednik flails around thinking "HOLY SHIT!" he's probably not alive today.

his condition was upgraded to "good". they said he lost roughly 1/3 of the blood in his body before they could stop the bleeding. here's a recent article from the AP:

Brittanie Cecil, 13, was killed during a Columbus Blue Jackets game in 2002 when a puck left the ice and struck her in the forehead.

ouch.

That incident is the reason they put up the nets behind the end boards. Its amazing how easy it is to die.

Well, I saw it once and I'm never watching again. Just like the Malarchuck video.

Kind of amazing that the announcers knew so quickly what had happened. Usually that stuff happens so fast that everyone's confused.

edit: By the way, in my years of playing hockey, I never thought about something like this happening, even though it seems like there's a pretty good possibility of it happening. I never thought twice about sticking my hand on the ice to pick up a glove or my stick (gloves aren't really that thick). I remember when I was younger some kid got hit in the chest with a puck and died on the spot from some bizarre heart thing (hit him at the exact perfect time or something) and that shook me up for a while. And when Trent McCleary got hit in the throat by a slapshot, that made me think a bit. But still, I always dove to block shots, never thought twice about it. In fact, as a winger it was my job to block shots from the point and I always made the extra effort to dive to block them with my body. The worse thing that ever happened is I got hit in the stomach, but all I got from that was a bruise. And it was worth it, because it was against our rivals and right in front of our fan section, so I looked like a stud.

I think it would be harder to get back on the horse after taking a stick/puck to the face.

An update on center Craig MacDonald, who had to leave Thursday’s game after being hit in the mouth with a wrist shot from Maple Leafs defenseman Hal Gill.

The team said on Friday MacDonald lost nine teeth, five cleanly while four were shaved in half. He received numerous stitches to his tongue and the inside of his lower lip, and a few more on his chin.

As if that weren’t enough, Friday morning he needed three root canals.

Amazing that given all that damage he skated himself off the ice. He’s a hockey player.
I cannot fathom how shitty this must have felt. This happened about a month and a half ago and he only missed like one game. Granted he has played with a full visor since it happened but once cleared by docs he'll be back to no visor/half visor and still playing.

Well.... a helmet wouldn't mean much against an elbow, it'd mostly protect against the head hitting the ice or the boards.
And some would say concussions only started becoming a problem in the 90's because that's when they were getting noticed and diagnosed, whereas earlier they would have been ignored or mistaken for something else.

Probably well enough to prevent incidents like this from happening. Maybe that's why Plekanecs (or however you spell that) in MTL wears a turtleneck. Yashin used to too, no?
