cos(x) = (1/3)

The cosine function can be expressed as an infinite sum:
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/images/...dEquation4.gif

So basically you just have to use trial and error by hand to find the x that gives you 1/3, I don't know any other way. Try starting with x = 5.7, I've got a feeling about that number.

dont be dumb. cosine oscillates from 1 to -1 back and forth. they want you to say when the value is 1/3. at 1.23 radians the value is 1/3. but you can add + or - 2pi to this and the answer is still right because cosine is periodic

Really, exactly 1.23 radians (scoff)? I think what LittleWing needs is an exact answer, something your precious calculator methods can't provide.

im just making sure you dont send him down the wrong path like finding an infinite sum for an elementary trig class. the answer hes looking for is inverse cos(1/3) anyways
