Default Is the movie "The Fountain" any good?

Is it worth checking out? Would anyone here recommend it? I was thinking about renting it this weekend. It seems interesting.

Isn't that the one with the guy from X-Men and Natalie Portman? Where they're like suspended in a little tree-globe in space? If it's the one I'm thinking of I didn't like it very much. It seemed sort of pretentious and I didn't think it really went anywhere. The girl I saw it with loved it though, she said I didn't get it. I thought her "explaination" was bullshit. Whatever.

The visuals were pretty cool I will admit.

Basically Wolverine's wife has head cancer or some shit and then he's in space and then he's wearing armor and battling a man with a flaming sword. It's fucking awesome when you think of it this way.

i really love the score.

i don't think anyone but aranofsky knows exactly what the hell is going on, so if you watch it and try and come up with your own ideas it can be a very interesting film. might require multiple viewings, though.

I thought it was a good movie, although it leaves a bit to the imagination. It was genuinely pretty sad, and the themes regarding death were, well not majorly thought provoking, but interesting and well-placed, and quite relevant to the movie.

The Fountain is like a big budget Outer Limits episode with the narrative abstracted just enough to make it a completely forgetable. Oh, and Wolverine cries a lot.

I didn't find it to be quite as nebulous or baffling as some here. It's not terrifically profound, nor do I think it was trying to be. It's just quietly beautiful and perfect. My favorite film in a long, long time.

Jumbling up 3 simple separate stories (well, I guess the astronaut and present day are connected) doesnt hide the fact they are lame and simple stories. Ironically, if told in order it would be worse.

you can't reallly tell it in order because the future is an alternate reality based on whether or not he decides to chase izzi out the door... in one he chooses to work, discovers the secret of eternal life, but is full of regret... he enters the star, rebirths the universe as first father, whatever, or it's a metaphor depending on your point of view but on the second go round he chases her out the door, doesn't work that day and doesn't discover eternal life, but comes to terms with her death

a good movie but imperfect yes

Yeah it's fucking beautiful.

It takes on the concept of immortality from 4 different perspectives and does a fantastic job of telling a story with it. It's probably one of the more philosophical movies out there.

it's a borefest and aronofsky is an artsy douche who's only great accomplishment were the lines "ASS TO ASS"

What he's working on now:

Quote:
The wrestler is the story of retired professional wrestler, Randy "The Ram" Robinson, making his way through the independent circuit, trying to get back in the game for one final showdown with his former rival. The film stars Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei and is directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream).
what a fucking loser.

Worth seeing for the visuals alone. The story seemed rather sleight to me and even felt cheesy at times but overall I enjoyed it. Would love to have seen what the film could have been before budget cuts meant a scaling back of the entire project. Has anyone read the graphic novel? I think it’s closer to the original idea.

They are all directly connected. The story is told in order. It's presented from the point of view of Tom trying to make sense of things, through his own memories and through the story Izzy wrote for him. It wouldn't make any sense to play it in "chronological" order, especially since one of the time periods is fictional.

I agree it's a pretty simple idea at the heart of the story. Doesn't make it any less beautiful, to me.
