they don't have steam heat as an option and i'm not sure what powers whatever it is that creates the heat for the steam

Yes.

And I still don't get it. Probably because I share an apartment with two friends, we don't have a car and only use public transportation etc.

mine would be huge. i live in a huge house with only one roommate which costs about three grand a year to heat. i have a 50" plasma tv on almost all the time. i used to drive a 8 cylinder car that got about 9mpg.

having a car is huge. i pollute so much with it but i have little choice

i just live with my brother and we dont have air conditioning and we never use the heater (mostly useless in lots of parts of california). also we make a lot of small adjustments like eco friendly light bulbs, short showers, lots of recycling, washing with cold water, etc. but if it weren't for the car thing then I could say I'm eco-responsible. half my commute is by train though.
