Skeletal Remains Are Found in a Brooklyn Home

The police found the skeletal remains of a woman in a home in Brooklyn yesterday. How long ago she died was unknown, but neighbors said they had not seen her for about two years.

There was no evidence of foul play, investigators said. An autopsy was planned.

Neighbors said the woman was Christine Copeman, believed to be in her 60s. They described her as a retired bank worker who was widowed and mostly kept to herself.

Mail had piled up behind the storm door at her brick row house on East 92nd Street in Brownsville, and deliveries of bottled water had accumulated on her porch.

“I thought she had gone home to Trinidad for a vacation,” said Ruby Fulmer, 92, a retired professor of nursing and long her next-door neighborfor three decades. “But then I thought, that’s a long vacation.”

Other neighbors had noticed that Ms. Copeman’s front yard was no longer kept clean. One neighbor sought intervention. Dolores Harvey, 49, a housekeeper who lives a few doors away, said she had smelled a faint foul odor and called 911. The police said they could not detect the odor.

They “said there was nothing to do,” Ms. Harvey said. “I was worrying, but I truly did not think that she was in there.”

A nephew of Ms. Copeman’s late husband had occasionally visited and asked about her, neighbors said.

The police said that a relative’s phone call prompted them to break into the house. The nephew and another relative were present, neighbors said.

Officers discovered the remains in the hallway of the top floor. Ms. Copeman’s body was fully dressed, as though she were going out, neighbors said the nephew told them. Ms. Harvey said she spoke to a worker from the medical examiner’s office who “said she had a hat on and everything.”

Oh how sad. Poor little old woman, at least she is now resting peacefully in heaven. The same thing happened to one of my neighbors a couple of years ago, she died and no one found her for two weeks. How very sad.

I remember a weird story like this a couple years ago. A really skinny woman in her 40's went behind a tv console, fell and hit her head and died. She lived with her sister in the same house. Her sister reported her as missing and after a few months she could start to smell a foul odor from behind the tv. When she checked behind the tv, she found her sister was wedged behind the tv and the wall rotting.

What a find.

Mark Voegel, 30, was found dead in his Dortmund, Germany apartment. His body was draped in spider webs and more than 200 spiders, several snakes, thousands of termites, and a gecko were feasting on his corpse.
Proper authorities were alerted when concerned neighbours noticed a horrendous stench eminating from the apartment.

His black widow, Bettina, is believed to have administered the deadly bite.

Voeger's apartment has been described as both a "zoo" and a "jungle" by authorities. He never let people visit.

A police spokesman said: “It was like a horror movie. His corpse was over the sofa. Giant webs draped him, spiders were all over him. They were coming out of his nose and his mouth. There was everything there one could imagine in the world of reptiles. Larger pieces of flesh torn off by the lizards were scooped up and taken back to the webs of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders.”

The spiders and termites managed to escape when the heating elements exploded and opened the lids to their tanks.

The lizards were allowed to roam.

Voegel also kept a pet boa constricter and several poisonous frogs.

He was dead for somewhere between seven and fourteen days when his corpse was found. Enough time for the creepy-crawlies to make a new home out of his apartment.

My godmother lived by herself a few miles away from where my family lives and we would see her fairly often. On 4th of July 06 my mother called her up to see if she wanted to cook out since we had always done this. She said she did not feel up to it and got very angry at my mother. Then she stopped returning calls. After four or five days the next door neighbor being concerned for her dogs used the hidden key to get inside the house to find my godmother had been dead for several days. She was lying on the couch and probably died in her sleep... keep in mind it was July and the air conditioning was not on. Apparently in four days she had been reduced to a barely unrecognizable form of decay. This has always freaked me out. I can't imagine finding a dead body. I think it would ruin my life forever.
