i just recently bought a xbox 360 arcade, and the lack of a hard drive is killing me right now, but i just couldn't afford the $450 for the 'elite' package. though technically i can add internal memory later, right?

i'd love to set this up on a media center network and shove a bunch of music and movies onto my xbox.

does anyone know whether i can use the USB wireless router to stream onto the xbox if i already have an established wireless network?

if by 'xbox' you mean the original... i havent dealt with the newer ones. But yes, you can. your xbox has a network setting and a cat5 port which can be plugged into a hub or switch. you can use Filezilla http://filezilla-project.org/ to transfer to it easily

your xbox 360 needs a wireless adapter. i'm using an old original xbox microsoft wireless adapter connected to the cat5 port on my 360. The official xbox360 wireless adapter is around $100 I think, but I wouldn't be surprised if any decent wireless adapter would work on the 360, but don't take my word for it.

After you get your xbox to recognize and access your wireless network, your computer needs microsoft's free zune program (which is basically microsoft's version of itunes), with share to xbox checked on, because the xbox looks at your zune library and that's what it can stream.

yeah, i found that USB wireless adapter, and, unfortunately, it is $100.

the software on the 360 told me i needed a "media center equipped PC" which i suppose is referring to the windows media stream program i have on my computer. i guess the only way to find out what works and what doesn't is to just try it out. now, where did i put that $100...

I *think* that is why I downloaded the zune program to stream stuff to my xbox 360. Because I don't have windows "media center" on my pc. Unless they're just talking about windows media player... Ugh, I set all this up a couple months ago and I've pretty much forgotten all the technical details...I think the zune program may be the alternative if you don't have a windows media center equiped pc.

You could also hook the 360 to the router (or a PC) directly with an ethernet cable, assuming your router still has a LAN port open. Instead of buying their wireless adaptor...

oh yeah, that's true, you don't need to shell out $100 for a wireless adapter if you just go with wired. I'm only going wireless because I didn't want to run a 30 foot long ethernet cable from my back office to the living room.

When MS speaks of media center, its literally talking about the media center software that is included in Windows XP media center edition or windows Vista. Thats funny that the Zune software works just as well tho. Not a bad alternative i guess.

if you're on xp, there's supposed to be a special program you download that helps you share your files with a 360 i think. on vista you can just find it as a media extender and set it up right like you were sharing a file to a pc or set top box.

i guess what i mean to say is you don't necessarily NEED media center.

That media center is primarily used to record TV with a TV tuner card.

its got way more than that though. Media center itself isn't too shabby, and i would probably use it if it wasn't pretty bad with my music collection and recognizing the album art.
