If they have to turn in their needles for clean ones why are there needles laying in the streets? What are they going to exhange for their new needles...nonsensical rants?

The organization responsible for giving out the needles claims that they have a return rate of 85%, which leaves anywhere from 50,000-150,000 needles that are never returned. Of course all of these needles in the streets aren't from that organization, but nonetheless in what amounts to essentially supporting users' addictions is hurting the surrounding neighborhoods. Whether it's giving out money to the homeless or giving out clean needles to feed users' habits, I don't believe government should be providing such things to those who contribute the least to society. The homeless/addicts should be doin' something in return for these services, whether it be working or doing rehab, they shouldn't have a choice in the matter, otherwise these services amount to nothing more than handouts.

you know many of these people are mentally ill, and you would have to be crazy to get paid to be homeless and like it which is what I hear a lot of people insinuate.
i can't believe how my generation is so completely self-centered. does each progressing american generation get more and more in love with themselves? |

i generally feel bad for them but i've had enough bad experiences with being harassed by the bad ones that i pretty much give them the cold shoulder now, which makes me feel even worse.

One of my professors worked with homeless LGBT kids in New York for a long time, it is interesting when she talks about it.
The other day she was talking about work she did for her organization. She would go out with teams of volunteers and students and study the symbols around them, essentially "read the streets" she called it looking for signs of the homeless. Because essentially when we think of the homeless we think of homeless adults out on the sidewalk, with their belongings around them or begging for money or whatever. But often it's hard to tell, especially with children, which could be homeless and which aren't, usually they look the same. So they go out in the neighborhoods and look for signs of the homeless, like backpacks hidden under dumpsters, so no one finds their school books and takes them when they aren't in school. Also certain homeless kids have symbols they draw on buildings and doorways of buildings. If there is a safe place to sleep at night they'll have one symbol or if another place is dangerous there will be different symbol to tell other homeless kids to stay away. It's pretty interesting. I think what she gets at is that homelessness isn't very well understood by most people, or that there are a lot of misconceptions about the homeless. |
