Question moral question

somebody lost a wallet at my place of work. it was lost by a european tourist. i made an honest attempt to get in touch with the person so the wallet could be returned, but never got a response.

i only recently realized there is a large amount of cash in the wallet ($300+). not sure if my supervisor knows this or not.

do i take the cash or not?

Keep trying to find this person, but dont let anyone but that person take it off your hands, failing that, hold on to the wallet and the money for a while, then if nothing comes up.... well i guess its yours.

Or take the money and run.

I basically agree with that. I wouldn't say it's wrong to take the money if there's no chance of it being claimed, but I wouldn't take it as my own unless I really needed it.

What do you mean by an honest attempt? You called where they were staying, or something? They might be on their way back home now. TRY HARDER SWEETMUSK

I would wait a week after you have contacted the individual. I mean if you think about it he/she has probably cancelled his credit cards etc and doesn't think too much of it anymore that anyone would try to contact them. So if you give it a week and still no reply then take the money.

i will try to get in touch with the person again. it is true that once is not enough.

however. if the money is not ultimately claimed, i believe that the institution i work for will take it. i am not paid very well and i am not sure i can simply stand by and let that happen.

Did you earn that money, or somebody else's?

Well if your supervisor does know about it, and it suddenly disappears, you're going to jail buddy!

the way i see it, you start with 2 possibilities:

-the rightful owner gets it (first preference)
-someone else gets it (up to you who that is in the end)

so assuming you can't get it back to the owner:

you don't want to let someone get it that needs it less than you, as it's a waste (eg. boss, police etc.) that would be the worsening the situation.

it's currently with you, so there's 2 choices:
-either better the situation of who could have received the money (ie. give it to a more needy person/organisation) or
-keep it.

there's always the possibility that the owner may give you a reward which is a portion of what is in the wallet, if they get it back?
