try a catering business. cook from home and deliver. more chance of doing well than a restaurant.

If you want to spend your life being grossly underpaid, eating your meals in 5 minute increments, working every single weekend and holiday, training people who will quit within 2 months, smoke 2 packs a day, become a pathetic alcoholic with a short circuited temper then being a chef is definitely the career choice for you.

My god you just described my life. Add in that even if you love cooking and work you way up through the ranks you will no longer be cooking and you basically end up doing tons of paperwork. You start out cooking and work you way up the ranks to accountant. Worse yet you get stuck mid-level where you end up cooking and doing paper for little money. Cook your ass off all day long then spend hours updating inventory prices, calling in orders, menu revisions....

Oh and no mater what you ever do the owner thinks you are wrong.

I work at a restaurant that offers a seven course fixed-price tasting menu, so they basically only serve one of three things for each course. The chefs (main and others) are really good, but I don't know if the type of restaurant it is would make things easier (so few choices) or harder (has to be really fancy). Also, the kitchen is open to the dining area, so the people eating there can see their food being cooked, I'd imagine that's not very appealing for a chef.
