i disagree. at that point cal looked great, but they lost at home to Oregon State, and it seems everyone has been upset lately and then I think they just quit.

Cal was on the goaline against OSU and if they had gotten a few more yards they would have been #1. It doesn't matter they still would have lost yesterday.

This season is great. There is no clear title team and it will come down to the final week. I mean seriously trots do you want another oklahoma/usc game?
the shakeup from top to bottom came at a good time in the cfb world.

in fact, you might have to suffer watching Ohio State in the title game AGAIN this year so I don't know what you're talking about "coming down to the final weekend" and another USC v. Oklahoma game which has never been played before.

If LSU doesn't play for the title this season is a total waste.

i get this feeling indiana is going to beat someone big in the big ten. illinois is an easy target, but ohio state and michigan could get jumped.

They might as well just crown the SEC champ as the title winner.

Michigan beat Illest at Champagne without Mike Hart and with Henne hurt for a good chunk of it. Maybe scUM has figured out how to slow down mobile QBs and will actually manage to salvage their season. Still, Hart needs to get healthy and Henne needs to stay healthy in order for that to happen.

the championship game will be played between two 1-2 loss teams. that'll make for a good argument to get playoffs when the BCS format is up in 2012.

It's nice to see that the number 4 team in the country can be shut out in the 1st half by Iowa State.

Eulogy gains some points this week - but not because his arguments are convincing, but because of on-the-field results. The Pac-10 is looking less good. And I put the SEC back ahead this week. Cal has been exposed as a tier 2 team and Oregon just got their best game.

However, I think USC has recovered well enough in what is still the 2nd best conference in the country. Pac-10 looks like this:

1:
Oregon
ASU (still needs to play a top tier team to show worthiness (like OSU, BC and Kansas)
USC

2:
Cal
UCLA

3:
Oregon St. (may pull through this year to teir 2, but it's tough to tell)

4:
WSU, Washington, Stanford

5:
Arizona

Arizona has had good showings (much like a tier 4 team) but I'm chalking that up to parity at this point. Washington had a lot of promise, but look like crap. If Stanford had beat TCU, that woul dhave almost given them an impossible leap to tier 3, but no.

In fact, non-conference crappery over the last few weeks and the "elite" pac-10 teams struggling has made this conference closer to the big-12 (3rd best conference) than the SEC at this point. Although the SEC hasn't look dominant this year either though.

1. SEC
2. Pac-10
3. Big-12

4. Big East
5. Big 10 (Michigan's rebound should be noted)

6. ACC

My top 10:

1 LSU
2 Oregon
3 Ohio State
4 Oklahoma
5 Arizona State
6 Boston College
7 Virginia Tech
8 USC
9 Kansas
10 West Virginia

LSU and Oregon are the best teams in the country, having showed it against tough schedules. Their losses are tough, close and to decent teams. The unbeatens have not been challenged enough to put them ahead of LSU and Oregon.

OU drops because I've realized their their loss was much like USC's loss and their schedule thus far much like SC's. A close loss to an ok team, but not all super hard games anyway - not like Oregon and LSU have had. I moved SC up because of this as well.

ASU is a paper tiger. they are "tier 2" in the pac 10 right now.

and its surprising that a tier 2 pac 10 team is in the driver seat right now

this is just about right, i think.

i think the SEC still legitimately has 3 of the top 10 teams in the country. but at this point it's hard to actually put them there. although i'd probably throw Florida and/or Kentucky in there still. i dunno.

i just can't wait for BC to lose.

...and I hate to say it, but USC did look like they were clearly the best team we've faced all year. how in the hell did they lose to stanford? does anyone else think that booty staying in with a broken finger could have been a major factor?

I agree with you that they are a paper tiger and will end up in tier 2, but based on on-the-field results, they are solid tier 1 right now - they have the same cred as the #1 team.
