Default Giving the bad news to a band mate

So my other friend Derek and myself are guitarists and want to start a band. We put an ad out for a bass player but instead the guy who responded plays guitar but bass too. He told us he didn't want to be a primary bass player so that was somewhat a problem. He's a good guy too, and the three of us have gone out to get drinks and talk music and what not, but when we finally played with him, we found that he played like fucking Eric Clapton (blues scales, soloing everywhere). Ideally, we want to play rock music, but not none that sounds like Incubus or anything since that what he listens to.

So finally, Derek and myself talked about it and decided he's not fit for the band we want to start, but the only question is how we do that. I kinda don't want to hurt the guys feelings.

business is business.

or just fucking tell him what kind of music you want, and if he's a good enough musician, he can do it. if not, move on.

you put out an ad for a bass player, and he doesn't want to play the bass... tell him he isn't what you are looking for and maybe just keep him around to jam/hang out with

Did you play music with him to see if your idea that "he doesn't fit with the band" is really a true idea. You never know it could diversify the sound of your band and make it's sound even cooler. I would say listen to him play and talk to him and if you think it might be worth a shot playing with him in your band to see what it's like than try it out. If you dont try it out you'll never know.
IIf you have decided that it's not what your looking for you might say something simply like: you have a great talent and i really enjoyed meeting with you but its just not what we are looking for, for us. thank you very much and rock on.
that's all you have to do. and then wave and smile to him when you see him in passing by

i would tell the person that we need someone who will want to play just bass with us and in a style of music that we want to play. And from what we know of you, I am not sure we would have the same artistic dreams.

I wouldn't feel too bad for him man. If he is that good he'll have no problem forming another band that will undoubtedly overshadow you in the local scene and eventually make it big. If you are lucky he will remember you and let you work as a roadie. When he is drunkenly hurling whiskey bottles at your head you will realize that you are living out your rock and roll dreams.

LOL to Ol Couch Ass's post.

He IS an amazing musician, but as Derek put it, his style is "plain and unoriginal". He plays like one of those 40 year old guys that come into Guitar Center and crank up a Marshall hooked up to a Les Paul.

When the three of us played in the same room, I'd be working on a riff with Derek and the other guy would come in with a solo. I told my girlfriend the other night that I didn't want a "guitar hero" in the band, just someone who had some original ideas and some good musicianship. He also didn't like playing in drop-D very much either, which is what we were in a good deal of the time.

In other words he's out of your league musically and you're just intimidated.

Something like that, I suppose. I'll admit I was intimidated at first because it was supposed to be a jam to get some ideas rolling around and it turned into "who's the better guitarist" session. I'm no Hendrix, but I know I can play better than that guy from Linkin Park.
