Once I heard an anti-war advocate and mother to an enlisted solider query, "Do you want my son to die?" The follow-up question, of course, concerns troop withdrawal, then collapses into argument. Politicians are often posed questions with unfair implications. It's routine. They dodge as best they can.

So, a hypothetical question was answered according to policy. Mind it was an inciting, loaded question - and unfairly personalized. Romney could have given a more tactful answer, yes. But some sidestepping to that question was a judicious choice. Had it been differently posed, a more suitable answer would have likely been provided.

i don't see what he did wrong. he did the normal political thing never made it too personal...

all running people running for office can be called a douche.

he most likely doesn't have that guy vote, so the question was rather just a political trap. pretty obvious to me.

I don't see the problem here. Romney clearly stated his policy view on the matter (wrongheaded as it may be). I thought that his bringing up synthetic marijuana (which I'm hearing about for the first time) was a lot more moderate response than you'd get from many politicians. What else did the kid want from him, some sort of preemptive pardon? ("Sure son, even though I'm against medical marijuana as a policy, I'll make a special exception for you.") That seems to be asking a bit much I think.

That kid's time would be better spent harassing Congress to change the law than it is trying to harass presidential candidates into promising not to enforce it as it stands.

Well, he gave an answer in accordance with his stated policy. He could have done more to show his compassion and more to explain why his policy is that way.

the kid didn't do anything wrong by asking the question and romney didn't do anything wrong by answering it the way he did.

It was just an akward situation and that is that.

The scary thing is the forced smile he's giving while being heckled by the other guy. Probably playing captain obvious here but what really shows through is his acting ability. not his ability to be an asshole but his ability to put on a plastic smile without feeling like smiling.
