compress it. your computer is already slow as hell, a few extra hours of loading time shouldn't make a difference. 1 20.00%
delete, things will explode if you don't. 2 40.00%
just let it fill up. nothing will happen, you'll just run out of room. 1 20.00%

Question how much HD space is not enough?

my computer has 1.9 gigs (which is nothing). but at this point i have 3/4 of it full, so i'm down to 500 MB. is it time to start deleting things?
i am asking because i don't know very much about computers when compared to the rest of you geeks.

i have 177 gigs of storage and it's mostly full... but i do a lot of audio editing and stuff, which takes lots of space.

i say go spend $50 and buy yourself a 40 gig hard drive.

maybe something i should have mentioned in my first post was that i don't have any money right now. i mean ANY. i don't even have $10 to buy a 10 gig HD. so.... buying something is not an option.

I only started deleting things when I was down to 90 MB left... now I have 562.1 MB left, out of a 3GB hard drive, and am trying to keep it more or less around this. There's no real point in buying more for this computer, either, cause it's rather old and will have to replaced soon enough...

To answer your real question, yeah..I'd start deleting some things. The telltale sign is if things are starting to crawl. Make sure that you don't have anything in your startup menu (besides the obvious systray), too.

so you let your hd get down to 90 mb and didn't experience any performance type problems?
well maybe i will just do that then. i mean, my computer is the same way, because i do plan to replace it as soon as i get the money, so if i DID buy something for it, then i just as well may have put that money into buying a new computer altogether.
the only other option besides deleting it or leaving it that i have is to compress it. i did that on my old 1 gig, 120 mghtz comp that i had and it didn't slow anything down for me, but brad is really encouraging me NOT to compress it because he instists it will only slow things down.

Do you have a CD burner? Try storing things on CDRs instead of your HD, especially if you don't use them much. Remove any programs you don't use often, and do a cleanup to remove any temporary files (right-click your HD, go to properties and its in there somewhere). You could limit your virtual memory too, so it doesn't start taking over your space

Not that I recall, no... But it was only on 90mb for a short time, a few days maybe, I didn't want to risk anything so I just burned 500mb of mp3s to a cd-r...

And yeah, you should probably save the money for buying a new computer altogether. There's no real reason to invest in something you plan on replacing soon anyway...

I've been needing to do this. I have tons of music and pr0n on my computer that getting out of hand. The key thing I need to do is remove those programs that run that I don't need. I swear I have tons but I don't know which ones are crap, good or will ruin my computer if I delete them. I need to take care of this crap right now.
