My friend from WI was telling me about these people :erm
__________________________________________________ http://hmongstoday.com/ It is unclear as to where hmongs originated but from what's been researched, hmongs were slaves of the Chinese who freed themselves by moving into the mountains of China. The slaves named themselves "hmong" meaning "freedom". Some hmongs eventually migrated into Laos and Thailand and intermixed into their cultures. Although hmongs have been around Asia for quite some time, they've only been in the United States for about two decades. Most of them fled to the United States to escape the "private war" while others fled to Australia and France. There may be Hmongs in other countries or continents as well but very few due to the fact that hmongs like to hold on to the comfort of community and culture. A large population of hmongs reside in Fresno California because a lot of them don't speak english very well or at all and depend on welfare income to support them and their families. There is also a large hmong population in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The largest hmong population is probably in Minnesota but not because they are there to collect government income, but rather, to build their business and move out of government support. Hmongs prefer to live in communities. Some communities are fairly large, consisting over thousands of families. Other's aren't quite that big and may run between 20 and 100 families. It is rare to see a hmong person living on their own and those who do are usually considered outcasts or are not wanted by their family members, but in some areas, this way of life is slowly being accepted.
